China and Japan Mail
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2088 c 10c Brown (161).> Two, rich color, tied by two bold strikes of large <San Francisco Foreign Mail> segmented cork cancel on cover <originating in Shanghai, China,> and addressed to Mrs. E. S. DeKrafft in
Wilmington Del., magenta San Francisco Paid Al10c Brown (161). Two, rich color, tied by two bold strikes of large San Francisco Foreign Mail segmented cork cancel on cover originating in Shanghai, China, and addressed to Mrs. E. S. DeKrafft in Wilmington Del., magenta "San Francisco Paid All Jan. 31" circular datestamp and another strike dated Feb. 1 applied at the foreign-mail department, additional "San Francisco Cal. Feb. 1" duplex datestamp applied by domestic-mail department, pencil receipt docketing "Dec. 23d Shanghai" and "1874 Dec. 23d", backflap removed, small tear at top, otherwise Very Fine, this was sent by U.S.N. Admiral James Charles P. DeKrafft to his wife, Elizabeth Sellers DeKrafft, while he was in Shanghai, it was carried by PMSS Branch Line steamer Nevada, departing Shanghai Dec. 25, 1874, arriving at Yokohama on Jan. 1, 1875, then by the Altona under contract with PMSS, departing Yokohama Jan. 7, arriving San Francisco Jan. 30, this cover was evidently postmarked on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in the San Francisco foreign-mail department (where the large fancy cancels were applied), then handed over to the domestic-mail department where it was postmarked again and bagged for the next train departure, the 20c postage is apparently a double 10c rate from China -- a fascinating use, which bypassed the U.S. Postal Agency in Shanghai and entered the mails in San Francisco (see Frajola-Perlman-Scamp book, p. 195, for another cover from this correspondence) (Image)
