Classic China & Stamps of the People's Republic, with Specialized Manchukuo, Thailand and Burma - May 13-14, 2025

Over 700 lots of singles, sets and collections, spanning all eras of Chinese philately along with Burma, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and others. Imperial China includes imperforate and imperforate-between Large Dragons, a small 4¢ on 3¢ Red Revenue, and provisional bisects, while Republic offers 1912 Commemorative sheets, attractive Junk issues including several $20 values, etc. The extensive People’s Republic section includes scarce Liberated Areas material, three Mei Lan-fang souvenir sheets, a “Whole Country Is Red” single, and our usual array of popular sets.

Non-China is highlighted by a newly certified Hong Kong 1891 Jubilee First Day Cover, lovely Burma with a selection of pristine Japanese Occupation issues, and simply exquisite Thailand featuring British Bangkok, Thai Occupation of Kelantan, and Thailand proper with King Chulalongkorn unissued, proof and specimen items, Battambang Provisionals, inverted overprints, and more.

A cornerstone of the sale is the John Fontana Manchukuo Collection, a lifetime in the making and of unparalleled quality and quantity, with over 100 lots spanning every issue and period of postal history. An essentially complete parallel mint and used “basic” collection is supplemented with mint and used stocks organized by issue, First General Issue inscription blocks, Su Ping-wen Locals mint and used, Specimens, inverted overprints, special printings, booklet panes and complete booklets, UPU presentation books, varieties both Zirkle-listed and unlisted, along with appealing “Rate War” covers, covers by destination, a Graf Zeppelin-flown cover addressed to Mukden, and a supra-complete Official Commemorative Cancel collection.
