2216 cover   image3 Wonderful Soldier's Letters written at Camp Lee in Richmond VA Sept. 1864, first one Sept. 15th reads in part, "My case has not yet been decided finally. It is now before the President. He may decide it in a few days or it may be some time yet before I will know for certain what they will do with me. They have concluded not to send me to the army, but they may assign me to some duty that will not require me to go into battle. I shall await patiently their decision. I wish I could see you and give you a full history of my case. I cannot attempt to write it for it would take nearly a quire(?) of paper…There is little war news. All of the citizens have left Petersburg. They are camping in the country in tents. Nearly every house in the city has been struck by a cannonball or bomb shell. Grant still holds the Weldon road and is pushing his lines towards the South side road. It is evident his object is to cut that road and by so doing cut off all the supplies from Richmond. But the papers say that Gen. Lee is prepared for him whenever he attempts to cut the South side road. I would not be surprised if Lee attacks Grant in a few days for Grant is receiving reinforcements every day. He has built a railroad from city Point to the Weldon road and his cars are running upon it every day. Gold is worth 23 to 1 in Richmond and bank notes from 3 to 3.5….I think this will be the last heavy campaign we will have…"; second letter Sept. 22nd reads in part, "…Early has had a fight and had to fall back. No other news. Now is the most critical time of the Confederacy." and the third letter Sept. 23rd reads in part, "Early has been badly whipped in the Valley and has fallen back about 18 or 20 miles this side of Winchester. It is generally believed that Grant was there & commanded the Federal forces. His next move will be near Petersburg on the South side road & then upon the Danville road. Gen. Lee is being reinforced by every man that can be sent to him. There will be a big fight near Petersburg or no fight at all soon.", all letters accompanied by original envelopes with #11 or 12 stamped over the seal on the back (one with partial imprint); all stamps are damaged from opening, written by a Confederate soldier to his brother William A. Estes at Walnut Cove NC, letters with Extremely Fine content, fully imaged online. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (All Images)

2217 cover   imageSept. 1863 Stampless Cover from German Forwarding Agent to U.S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in Washington D.C. via Confederate New Braunsfels Texas, originated in Stettin, Germany with manuscript "Settin Sept. 7, 1863 Theodor Wellmann, Enclosed letter to the Postmaster at New Braunfels and request that it may be sent to its destination , cover portion with boxed Sep. 19 (1863) cancel, red Aachen Sep. 20 transit, red "N. York Am. Pkt. 28 Paid Oct. 6" credit datestamp and blue "TH Wellman & Co. Stettin" double oval handstamp at top left with red crayon "12" crossed out by blue crayon and pencil "Major Turner" at left edge, Very Fine, ex "River City", signed Trish Kaufmann.

This is a very interesting cover. New Braunfels Texas was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels as a colony for German immigrants in Texas, and over 300 Germany families settled there. Our best guess is that the sender had previously tried to send this but it did not get through, so this was a "Plan B" approach, given that this was only 18 years later after the founding of New Braunfels. Very smart if our theory is correct, but still lots of loose ends that could use tying up and thus would be a great article for the CWP.

2222 (cover) tm1864.0304 image1864, West to East Trans-Mississippi Cover Front, franked by #7 block of 6 and horizontal pair (originally a block of 8), stamps with individual vertical pen cancel, "Acton Texas March 4/64" manuscript postmark at top left on gray cover front addressed to Capt. J.A. Formwalt, Dalton Ga. Cleburne's Division, Smith's Brigade, Army of Tennessee", manuscript "Via Shreveport La." at bottom left; edgewear affects top left stamp and slightly affects others, Fine, this is a very rare West to East Trans-Mississippi cover front with 40¢ postage paid. Richard Krieger recorded 27 "positive" Trans-Mississippi covers that traveled West to East. This is #W5 in his census. We observed that of the 27 listed, only 2 are franked with #7, 1 is partially franked with #7 and none are franked with #6. A copy of his census accompanies this cover. For some unknown reason, probably because this is a cover front, it is neither listed nor priced in the Eastbound listings in the C.S.A. Handbook., with 1975 C.S.A. certificate (stating #6).

You can read the very interesting story of Formwalt's service at https://granburydepot.org/newsite/biography/major-john-alexander-formwalt-and-the-tenth-texas-infantry/ We paste the potion of Formwalt's story when he would have received this cover here -- "At the Battle of Chickamauga, fought on September 18–20, 1863, General Desher was killed and Smith took over, and the name of the brigade was changed to Smith's Brigade. On February 22, 1864, Smith's brigade was ordered out of its quarters at Tunnel Hill and sent to Dalton, Georgia, marching the nine miles to board a train there. They headed west but were stopped at Montgomery, Alabama, with orders to return to Dalton as fast as possible because Sherman was advancing from Jackson, Mississippi toward Meridian. While the men were getting off the cars at Dalton, they were ordered to retake Dug Gap, four miles to the west which had been captured. The brigade drove the Federals out of the gap and on February 27, they went into winter near Dalton." and if you read the rest of the story, you will be absolutely amazed that this artifact survived.

I suppose Missouri will vote the union ticket." (page 2 is a chart of the county votes to secede or not, and totals them s 7352 in favor of secession and 1688 opposed)… (page 3) "…The Texians have succeeded in taking all the forts and arms in Texas without any resistance on the part of the soldiers…Do you think there will be an emmigration (sic) from Missouri to Texas this fall?" and "I would like to know, sir, whether you will vote for cecession (sic) or union. I suspect you will vote for a southern Confederacy.", "Received Mach 29, 1861" on back of letter, Very Fine, ex Meroni & Felton and with Jack E. Molesworth's description at bottom of reverse, signed Weill backstamp, with 1994 C.S.A. certificate stating genuine cover but declining opinion on the eagle corner card.

Dr. James Milgram lists this cover as "G28" in his census of eagle markings that was published in the Feb. 2005 issue of The Chronicle. Milgram wrote "G28. W H P UST …."I first encountered this cover in John A. Fox's office when I saw it as part of one of Charles Meroni 's collections. No one including Meroni himself had any idea of the significance of the marking, whether it was postal or not. I remember that Meroni bought it at another Fox auction years before. It was touted as a Confederate packetboat cover in lot 908 of the Meroni Confederate sale, but there is no good evidence for this. I think it is just a name handstamp that found its way onto this piece of paper. It was also illustrated in catalog of the Robert A. Siegel auction, April 24, 1982, as lot 81 and has appeared in other sales since then."
