The Daguerre was brought down by enemy fire and the pilot and his two passengers were taken prisoner and moved to Germany. The pigeons were released and brought news of the balloon's capture to Paris. Due to strong winds, the Ville d'Orleans flew quickly north and nearly crashed into the North Sea during the night; in order to gain altitude, the pilot had to jettison one bag of mai in addition to the regular ballast. The jettisoned mail bag was picked up by a Norwegian fishing boat and turned over to the French Consul in Mandal, Norway. All of the stamps on this mail were washed off.
