2040   imagePalestine, 1917 (Dec. 31), cover sent free from SZ 44 to Antofagasta, Chile, arrival backstamp ties censor label. It was charged 40 centavos on arrival (black boxed mark on face). These covers were not supposed to be charged postage due but they often were. Such treatment is much more common on covers to Egypt. This is one of two recorded covers so charged in Chile. Rare, Fine to Very Fine.

It was sent first to GB where on May 23 a KGV 2 ½d. stamp was applied by the Foreign Secion, and the cover sent on the Switzerland, arriving May 26, censor label on reverse, Very Fine, the only such handling recorded by Firebrace, rare.

2051   imagePalestine, 1918 (Oct. 12), civilian letter from SZ 8 (Beirut) via Port Said to Cairo, posted free well after the free period was over; it was taxed with a pair of Egypt 1 pi postage due stamps for the postage and the fine, censored, most unusual, Very Fine.

EEF stamps were used as the British advanced north, arriving in Lebanon and the Syria in September. But stamps were not available until late November, thus the need for the prepayment system well after it was nolonger available in Palestine itself
