2644 image1926, April 10, CAM 2 Survey "Test" Flight, flown and signed by Lindbergh, also signed Conkling postmaster of Springfield Post Office, with "AIR-MAIL TEST TRIP/ SPRINGFIELD-CHICAGO/ APRIL 10, 1926" cachet cleanly ties 10¢ airmail (#C7), light toning from enclosure- visible only from reverse side and in no way detracts from this most incredible and historical item, Extremely Fine, one of eleven with Bahr cachet.

On the weekend before the Inauguration of service, Lindbergh and Philip R. Love flew their planes north for a survey of the route. In Springfield, Lindbergh's friend, Bahr, gave him a packet of 38 or so covers, which he flew to Chicago, autographed them, then sent them back to Springfield via Love's plane as Lindbergh continued non-stop back to St. Louis. This being one of those covers, the first Lindbergh ever carried. They were alsosigned by Springfield Postmaster, Conkling. Bahr added this cachet to 11 of the covers and saved the rest for later official flights with Lindbergh as pilot.

Lindbergh - Pilot, Incredible three page typed report of the crash that occurred near Ottawa, Illinois, after encountering fog on his way to Chicago "I turned backand attempted to drop a flare and land; but, the flare did not function and I again headed for Maywood hoping to find a break in the fog…", "Several times I descended to the top of the fog, which was eight to nine hundred feet…, My motor cut out at 8:20P.M., and I cut in the reserve….at 5,000 ft. the motor sputtered and died. I stepped up on the cowling and cut over the right side of the cockpit pulling the ripcord…." "I crossed my legs to keep from straddling a branch or wire, guarded my face with my hands and waited."after walking over to a car, "The occupants asked whether I had heard an airplane crash and it required some time to explain to them that I had been piloting the plane"., Very Fine.

Originating in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, where US airmail stamps were regularly sold in the posy office. A supply of the Lindbergh stamps came in from Detroit just before noon on the first day and made this cover possible. The 2PM cancel shows that it missed the 12:30 deadline for the Detroit to Chicago flight and had to go by train, 11PM Chicago cancel just made it!
