1952 (Sep 1) commercial cover with superb boxed 'MAIL OFFICE/1SEP1952/HMS CAMPANIA' datestamp, to Kodak in Perth with KGVI 3½d
brown x3 cancelled on arrival with 'REGISTERED PERTH/4SEP52/...' cds, blue/white R label at lower-left & airmail label at upper-left removed for being unnecessary, repaired 20mm tear at centre-top & minor blemishes. A rare cover. Ex George Speirs.
It seems probable that the cover was carried in a closed bag by ship to Fremantle & Perth. 'Campania' was flagship of the five Royal Navy vessels that sailed from Portsmouth to the uninhabited Monte Bello Islands, 120km north of Onslow, on the NW
coast of Western Australia. On 3.10.1952, the British exploded an atomic bomb there. Two more bombs were exploded on 16.5.1956 & 19.6.1956, these being the largest explosions ever in Australia. The last of them created six times the energy of the
bomb dropped on Hiroshima. (Image1) (Image2)
