1927 (Aug 8) pre-addressed envelope-front for the Mining Managers' Association at Broken Hill used as a parcel address-label with a
slightly larger backing piece with Third Wmk 1/- dull blue-green plus KGV Single Wmk 4d olive x2 tied by 'MELBOURNE 5/VIC' cds, minor blemishes. The interstate parcel rate for an item weighing between 3 & 4 pounds was 1/8d. (Image1) (Image2)

1928 (Aug 6) apparently social cover with sender's address "Palace Hotel/Shanghai" on the flap & also endorsed "Via Siberia", to
France with extraordinary solo franking of Third Wmk £1 grey (Cat $5000 for usage with other stamps; unpriced as a solo franking) tied by 'BROOME/WESTN AUSTRALIA' cds (another strike below) and the by now well-worn boxed 'FORWARDED/BY AIR MAIL'
cachet in violet, on arrival redirected to "Basses Pyrenees". The sender was almost certainly a Jewish 'White Russian' who settled in China after the Bolshevik Revolution. The addressee was a young Jewish woman. The whole thing is a puzzle encircling
a conundrum wrapped in an enigma. (Image1) (Image2)

1930 (June) NCR of Australia, Sydney large-format (304x152mm) envelope front with pre-printed The National Cash Register Co,
Dayton, Ohio, USA address and private 'PER U.S.A. AIR MAIL' cachets in violet, posted directly onto ship at Sydney with Kangaroos Small Multiple Wmk 1/- blue-green strip of 3 (one unit with minor faults) and KGV 1½d red Die II & 3d blue Die II tied
in transit by San Francisco wavy-line roller cancel with 'SAN FRANCISCO/JUN26/CALIF./1930' duplex cancel alongside, minor blemishes & small edge bends. The rate was four-times 3d per 1oz foreign letter rate plus seven-times 4d per ½oz internal US
airmail surcharge, with a ½d convenience overpayment, but apparently no late fee component.
Prior to the commencement of the PanAm Hong Kong-USA Clipper airmail service in April 1937 there was no 'all-the-way' airmail service from Australia to the USA; mail could be accelerated either by being sent airmail to England, by ship across the
Atlantic to New York plus US internal airmail, or by being sent from Sydney by ship across the Pacific to San Francisco plus US internal airmail. The surcharge for internal US airmail was 4d per ½oz, increased to 7d per ½oz in 1934. (Image1) (Image2)

1930 (June) NCR of Australia, Sydney large-format (295x145mm) envelope front with pre-printed The National Cash Register Co,
Dayton, Ohio, USA address and private 'PER U.S.A. AIR MAIL' cachets in violet on the face, posted directly onto ship at Sydney with Kangaroos Small Multiple Wmk 6d brown horizontal strip of 3, KGV 1½d red Die II x2 and Sturt 3d blue horizontal pair
tied in transit by 'WELLINGTON/NZ/ 16JL30/LOOSE LETTERS' cds cancels, endorsed "Rec'd 7/7/30" in pencil at upper-left, minor bends not affecting the adhesives. The rate was double 3d per 1oz foreign letter rate plus five-times 4d per ½oz internal US
airmail surcharge, plus 1d late fee. In 1922, the late fee on overseas mail was reduced from one additional rate of postage to 1d (2d for registered items from 1928). (Image1) (Image2)

Dayton, Ohio, USA address and private 'PER U.S.A. AIR MAIL' cachets in violet on the face, posted directly onto ship at Sydney with Kangaroos Small Multiple Wmk 6d brown & 1/- blue-green irregular strip of 3 tied in transit by
'HONOLULU/DEC26/HAWAII/1931' duplex cancel & very fine 'PAQUEBOT' straight-line cachet in violet (Hosking #1683) alongside, endorsed "Rec'd 10/13/30" [13 Oct] in pencil at upper-left, minor blemishes & small edge faults. The rate was three-times 3d
per 1oz foreign letter rate plus seven-times 4d per ½oz internal US airmail surcharge, plus 1d late fee and a 4d over-payment (presumably a mis-calculation of the number of internal airmail surcharges to be paid). (Image1) (Image2)

1930 (Dec) NCR of Australia, Sydney large-format (280x140mm) envelope front with pre-printed The National Cash Register Co, Dayton,
Ohio, USA address and private 'PER U.S.A. AIR MAIL' & 'LATE FEE' cachets in violet, posted directly onto ship at Sydney with Kangaroos Small Multiple Wmk 1/- blue-green three blocks of 4 (one unit with minor faults & a couple with minor bends
otherwise very fine) tied in transit by 'HONOLULU/DEC26/HAWAII/1931' duplex cancels & very fine 'PAQUEBOT' straight-line cachet in violet (Hosking #1683) alongside, minor blemishes & small edge bends. The rate was thirteen-times 3d per 1oz foreign
letter rate plus twenty-six-times 4d per ½oz internal US airmail surcharge, plus 1d late fee.
A remarkable franking: blocks of 4 of the 1/- are difficult to find used let alone on commercial cover. At this time there were no regular airmail services from Australia that required usage of these higher denominations. Although single 1/- stamps
are regularly seen on flight covers - particularly the 1931 experimental airmail to England - commercial usages are elusive, and multiples are rare.

(presumably a miscalculation of the number of internal airmail surcharges to be paid, or an under-payment of the next weight-step that has not been noticed). (Image1) (Image2)

and KGV 2d red Die III tied in transit by 'HONOLULU/HAWAII' undated double-oval cancels and 'HONOLULU/MAR20/HAWAII/1931' duplex cancel & very fine 'PAQUEBOT' straight-line cachet in violet (Hosking #1683) alongside, endorsed "Rec'd 3/29/31" [29
March] in pencil at upper-left, minor blemishes & small edge bends. The rate was eleven-times 3d per 1oz foreign letter rate plus twenty-two-times 4d per ½oz internal US airmail surcharge, plus 1d late fee.
A remarkable franking: blocks of 4 of the 6d & 1/- are difficult to find used let alone on commercial cover. At this time there were no regular airmail services from Australia that required usage of these higher denominations. Although single 1/-

at base and presumably returned, small pin-hole at top not affecting the stamp & minor transmission marks. The 2/- per ½oz rate provided 'all-the-way' airmail service to Europe, as compared to the 1/9d rate that provided airmail carriage by

1941 (Nov 25) envelope airmail to serviceman "F/Sgt LW Fry, RAF Station Catfoss, Yorkshire, England" endorsed "Aust-NZ-USA-GB" for
carriage by PanAm Trans-Pacific & Trans-Atlantic Clippers with 6d Kookaburra, KGVI 1/4d magenta and Kangaroos 2/- maroon horizontal pair tied by Perth, WA machine & cds cancels, censored locally with 'Opened ...' red/white resealing label tied by
'PASSED ...' handstamp at left, light but legible 'STATION POST OFFICE/23 JAN 1942/[...?] CATFOSS' boxed arrival datestamp in violet on face, a few small edge faults at top not affecting the adhesives or markings. The rate was 5/8d for a ½oz letter.
However, the item missed the California Clipper which left Auckland on 24.11.1941 and was the last to carry mail before the service was suspended after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Presumably carried by the Matson Line SS 'Mariposa' which
left New Zealand for the USA immediately after the attack, then by US domestic airmail to New York and PanAm Atlantic Clipper. (Image1)
