The two stamps were formerly a pair, of which this was the left-hand unit. Because the Perkins Bacon 2d is the only stamp recorded for this user, it is one of the key stamps in the entire series. Unlisted by Ron Butler and the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. Ex Don Pearce: sold for $2635 (Sale 247 Lot 378). At page 99, Ron Butler states "Only local correspondence was envisaged and there was only one denomination [the 2d]". However, he provides no authority for either assertion. In any event, 4d was for double-rate domestic letters, so allocation of 4d stamps should not be surprising. (Image1)
