Earhart, Amelia; Signed First Edition Book (1898-1937) American aviator, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932). Book about her Record Setting Flight Across the Atlantic, "20 hours, 40 Minutes: Our Flight in the Friendship", signed by the Author on the first free end paper. and additional note "To James Hargadan, in memory of a luncheon when he was the only man, Amelia W. Earhart", Sept. 22, 1928 (very slight fading at top of message, Hardcover. Oxidizing to maroon front cover and spine, binding loose with front pages partially detached. Age related toning and thumbing to pages. In good condition, Earhart's book documents her record setting flight across the Atlantic, which made her the first female aviator to accomplish such a feat. Octavo in original red cloth covers.

John Tyler. 1790-1862, 10th President 1841-45, manuscript "J. Tyler" free frank as ex-President with blue "Norfolk, VA." cds with "Steamboat" and "Free" straightlines on neat 1860 cover addressed in his hand to Rev. William B. Sprague in Albany N.Y., Very Fine and choice.
Estimate; $750 - 1,000.

Tyler was a Congressman, Governor of Virginia, and Senator. Elected Vice President under Harrison, he became President after only one month. His term was marked by frequent clashes with Whigs led by Henry Clay. He approved the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which clearly defined the American and Canadian boundary, and signed the measure annexing Texas. He was expelled from his party and denied renomination. In 1861, he was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives, becoming the only President to renounce his American citizenship. (Image1)

Pierce Butler. Signer of U.S. Constitution, Delegate from South Carolina., ALS, one-page letter signed "P. Butler" and dated "Jun 24. 1812", letter encloses "…statement of some payments made in Charleston on acct of the Claimant of the Salvador Lands…"; letter lower part of letter separated, Fine and rare.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Pierce Butler (1744-1822) was a South Carolina rice planter, slaveholder, politician, an officer in the Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He served as a state legislator, a member of the Congress of the Confederation, a delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, and a member of the United States Senate.

As one of the largest slaveholders in the United States, he defended American slavery for both political and personal motives, even though he had private misgivings about the institution and particularly about the African slave trade. He introduced the Fugitive Slave Clause into a draft of the U.S. Constitution, which gave a federal guarantee to the property rights of slaveholders. He supported counting the full slave population in state totals for the purposes of Congressional apportionment. (Image1)

(Camp Clark) United States Supreme Court, Arizona. Printed corner card on rebacked cover front from William F. Turner, Chief Justice of Arizona Territorial Supreme Court at Camp Clark to his wife in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, carried by Military Express from Camp Clark to Tucson with "Las Cruces N.M. March 26/ 64" manuscript postmark and matching "X" ties 3¢ rose (65), "April 25th" receipt docketing; stamp with a few small scrapes, a Very Fine use, ex-Chase, Birkinbine.

THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE FOLLOWING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ARIZONA TERRITORIAL GOVERNMENT ON DECEMBER 29, 1863.

William F. Turner was the first Chief Justice of the Territory of Arizona, The cover was carried by first by Military Mail to Tucson, then by Vedette Mail to Las Cruces, New Mexico Territory and finally placed in the U.S. Mails for transmission to Mt. Lebanon, Ohio.

Camp Clark was the original name for Fort Whipple when it was first located at Del Rio Springs near Chino Valley. (Image1)

Mohave City, Arizona Territory was founded to service Fort Mohave. The fort was established to protect northern Arizona gold and silver mines, as well as the nearby Colorado River crossing, from Indian attacks. Yuma, Arizona, Apr 18, 1885. Bright magenta cds (Kriege 11) on 2¢ red brown entire with "Wells, Fargo & Co's Express" printed frank to the Meachum & Co. Gun Dealers in St. Louis Mo., apparently carried by Wells Fargo to Kansas City, re-entered mails with 2¢ red brown (210) tied by "Kansas City Kans., Apr 23" duplex, Saint Louis (4.23) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

This entire was purchased at the Wells Fargo Office in Yuma for their express fee. It was deposited at the Yuma Post Office where it was cancelled and then handed over to the Wells Fargo agent for carriage in a sealed pouch on board the Southern Pacific train from Yuma to Deming, New Mexico Territory. The Wells Fargo agent then transferred to the Atchison, Topeka & Sante Fe railroad going to Kansas City. Entered the mails at Kansas City, Kansas. (Image1)

Two-line postmark on 1836 folded letter datelined "Helena May the 5th 1836" to Henderson Ky., interesting content from John Hart Standley to his brother including "…Kind brother we have got this far without any accident. The River is very high in many places - in the water there is very little of anything planted yet on the Mississippi and in many places cannot be before the 15th or 20th of this month. I have had no information relative to the corn market from below that I could rely upon but have no doubt that it is very low. Bacon is selling from 15 to 18 cts a pound along the River…"; few tone spots and edge wear, Very Fine and rare.

Manuscript postmark and matching pen stroke cancels 3¢ rose (65) on 1865 cover to West Haven, Michigan mailed during the office's fourth month of operation, original letter from William McMurphy of the 7th Michigan Cavalry on his march home to his parents datelined "Park Station, Col Territory, Oct 1st 1865" with some good content concerning his coming discharge and some military matters "…Gen Connor has been whipping the Indians very bad so they have left for parts unknown and it is not expected that they will turn up in these parts again this fall…I will try and keep you informed of our movements as well…tell her that Brother is not going to bring home an Indian for her…"; tiny 3¢ tear, Very Fine and rare manuscript postmark.
