Laramie, O.R., July 1. Oregon Route cds with manuscript date on 1851 folded letter to Illinois, with matching "10" rate handstamp crossed out in red crayon and re-rated "5" for the first day of the new rate, with original
trail letter enclosure with interesting content including…We have had one birth & one death in our company…Soon after we left the States we had some trouble with the indians of the Pawnee tribe. It took place on account of our
company being too small., F.-V.F.

A Post Office at Fort Laramie on the
Oregon Route or Oregon Trail across the plains was established in 1850. The Post Office was located in unorganized territory but attached to Oregon Territory for administrative purposes and was the last Post Office on the Oregon Trail going west.
