A WONDERFUL MULTIPLE OF THE 2R EAGLE WHICH WAS TAKEN OUT OF CHIHUAHUA DURING THE SECOND FRENCH
EVACUATION.
David Pietsch describes that "During the second French evacuation at least one sheet of Dos Reales 169-1865 stamps was carried away along with the Chihuahua overprinting device. This sheet was overprinted with the Chihuahua
name more or less vertically oriented, whereas those overprinted after fixation to covers were routinely horizontal… only one or possibly two sheets of the Dos Reales value have been found unused and overprinted with name.". Apparently
this sheet was cut into large blocks and this item originated there. This is not to be confused with the inexpensive reminders from this same consignment that reached the philatelic market without the Chihuahua overprint. (Image1) |
