1911, 3¢ deep violet, type I, S.L. watermark, the "Orangeburg" coil, perf. 12 vertically. Great color, tied to light buff Bell & Company imprint "Columbian Clasp" envelope (most uses are on bluish
envelopes) addressed to a "John Bauer," Columbus, Ohio, Very Fine, ex-Boker, with 1970 P.F. cert. submitted by "Paul Bauer" and signed by John Boker as well as 2001 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 389; $25,000.
CONSIDERED TO BE
ONE OF THE VERY FINEST ORANGEBURG COIL COVERS EXTANT.
The Orangeburg coil was produced by the Post Office Department in 1911 for the exclusive use of the Bell Pharmaceutical Company. These 3¢ coil stamps were employed to mail product
samples to physicians. Owing to the large volume of correspondence, the covers were processed through the first-class cancelling machine at Orangeburg, New York. Their intended use on third-class mail, combined with the general lack of awareness
among contemporary philatelists regarding their production, accounts for the great rarity of genuine examples today. (Image1)
