Prisoner of War Covers, Northern Prisons

Prisoner cover addressed to Mrs. Dr. Alfred Hughes at Wheeling, Va., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by boxed prison bars handstamp with matching "Columbus, O., Sep 9" cds, manuscript "exmnd, D.B. Tiffany, Inspector" provost marshal examiner's endorsement, with original lengthy four page enclosure; cover slightly reduced at right a bit into stamp, Very Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

On May 23, 1861, with his sympathies being with the south, Dr. Hughes had voted for the Ordinance of Secession adopted in the Richmond Virginia Convention. He was incarcerated as a political prisoner and sent to Camp Chase. He was exchanged in 1862 and went to Richmond where he practiced until 1865, when he moved to Baltimore.

Prisoner of war cover to Knoxville, Tenn., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Rock Island, Ill., Mar 7, '64" cds and target duplex, large "Prisoner's Letter, Approved" examiner's handstamp (Harrison type Ib), with original enclosure datelined "Rock Island Barracks, Mar 5th, 64" and with interesting content…"You will see by the above that I have changed quarters since I last wrote you, and Miss Nellie I must say that I am greatly pleased at the change, for the officers here are very kind to the prisoners, besides the quarters are far preferable to those of Camp Chase, and the rations we draw are better and more plentiful. We have abundant rations, and besides, we are allowed to send out and purchase any article of luxury that we may desire. I am as well contented as a prisoner can be. I was very sorry to hear that your brother was captured, but glad to learn of his good health, and conformable quarters. I have not heard from Capt Nat C. McSeam since we left him in Cincinnati with the political prisoners…The Knoxville prisoners are a portion of them here with me, they all send their kindest regards. I was sorry to learn that you were the only family left of our old friends. I presume you are quite lonely, but cheer up, this war will not last forever, thank God…My address is Barracks 56 Rock Island, Ill."; stamp with nick at bottom, Very Fine.
