Nova Scotia, 1815, Incoming Folded Letter from Trieste to Halifax. Datelined "Trieste 16 Gennaio 1815" (slightly affected with wax seal removal), manuscript "p Elk Capt.
Richie" at lower left and "Liverpool 8 May 1815, rec'd & forwarded by your Obt Servts Thos. & Will. Earle & Co", on left flap, neat "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter London 6 My 1815" with Crown struck over flap, Very Fine, ex-Smith &
"Dubois" (H. Wood). Estimate; $750 - 1,000.
A VERY RARE WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER MARKING ON COVER TO NOVA SCOTIA FROM TRIESTE.
The "Withdrawn Ship Letter" marking is particularly rare and worth mentioning. It was USED in
1814-1815 when a Post Office experiment allowed people to send letters abroad by handing them in at a Port Post Office, where they paid one-third of the rate of a "Packet Letter". The sender could then withdraw the letter and send it by any private
ship of their choice. Such letters were known as "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letters". (Image1) (Image2)
