Gems of Philately continued...

U.S. Stamps - 1862-66 2¢-15¢ Issues continued...
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
381 o    73 var. image1863, 2¢ black, major double transfer ("Preston shift"). Left gutter margin single (position 81R), blue ink brush cancel, usual centering to the top with huge margins around and showing portions of adjacent stamps at sides, bold color and impression on fresh paper clearly showing shift, two small corner creases at bottom, otherwise Fine, a lovely example of this major double transfer rarity, ex-McClellan, with 2009 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 73 var.; $4,000.

Originally discovered in 1951, Stanley Ashbrook a few years later commented on this variety after consulting many of the prominent Black Jack students, and found no one had ever seen an example of this stamp…It is the only copy that I have ever been able to find and is evidently much scarcer than the well-known "Atherton Shift"..

U.S. Stamps - 1867 Grilled & 1875 Re-issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
392     79 image1867, 3¢ rose, A. grill. Small part o.g., clearly defined grill, radiant color, beautifully centered with virtually intact perfs which is very rare for this issue, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Spencer Anderson, with 1937 A.P.S. & 1997 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 79; $8,500.

THE 1867 3¢ A. GRILL IS SELDOM FOUND IN SOUND, ESPECIALLY WITH INTACT PERFORATIONS AND CENTERING SUCH AS THIS GEM EXAMPLE.

The experimental A Grill covered the entire stamp. On most examples, this caused the perforations to virtually disintegrate when the stamps were separated. Examples of the 3¢ A. Grill such as the stamp offered here, with virtually full perforations all around, are true condition rarities.

Scott No. 85B; $1,100.

A STUNNING COMBINATION OF CENTERING AND CANCELLATION RARELY FOUND AMONG EXAMPLES OF THE 1868 2¢ BLACK JACK Z. GRILL.

Only a small quantity of 2¢ sheets were grilled during the period when the Z. device was active. After the D. Grill, the Z. is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps.

397 o    85B image1867, 2¢ black, Z. grill. Well centered, beautiful sharp grill points clearly showing the horizontal ridges unique to the Z. grill, cancelled by neat red New York City "Post Office" town cancel, Very Fine and rare, ex-Puliafito, with 1995 & 2009 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 85B; $1,100.

AN INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND WELL CENTERED. ESPECIALLY RARE WITH A RED TOWN CANCELLATION.

Narrow spacing on the plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough room between subjects for the large Perf 12 gauge holes. As a result, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or more sides. The scarcity of four margined copies multiplies exponentially when the Z. Grill is factored into the equation, particularly with a fancy red color cancellation.
