285 o    34 image1857, 10¢ green, type IV, recut at top. Position 3R1. The so-called "misplaced relief" position, neat bold New York Ocean Mail integral grid date stamp cancel, beautifully centered, fresh color and sharp impression, Very Fine and choice, ex-Klein and Sevenoaks, with 1979 & 2001 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 34; $2,200.

A LOVELY USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 10¢ TYPE IV PERFORATED ISSUE WITH THE NEW YORK OCEAN MAIL CANCELLATION.

When the plate was being entered from the transfer roll (or rolls), three vertical rows were started with the B relief instead of the A relief. These were the first two rows of the left pane and the third row of the right pane. Only the first position in each vertical row is misplaced -- the rest of the plate was laid out with the A relief used for the top two rows. Position 3R1, one of the three misplaced relief positions on the plate, also bears the distinction of being one of eight recut positions and the only position recut on the entire right pane of the plate.

296 o    39 image1860, 90¢ blue. Deep rich color, neat magenta manuscript cancel, well centered with bright color; tiny corner crease at bottom right and of no significance, Extremely Fine appearance, with clear 2009 P.F. certificate and missing P.F. cert. (#436061).
Scott No. 39; $3,250.

A GORGEOUS STAMP AND ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE 1860 90¢ BLUE HIGH VALUE.

Used examples of Scott 39 are considerably scarcer than unused copies, as they were valid for a short period of time and were only used to pay high postage rates. For many years this magenta cancel was thought to have been used in Shanghai, China, however evidence now points to usage from New York City. The magenta wavy-line pen cancel on this stamp is also seen on the reconstructed multiple of five pictured in the Ishikawa book and sale catalogue.
