ONE OF ONLY TWO SURVIVING NEW ZEALAND USAGES FROM THE P.&O. "COLOMBO" WRECK BEARING STAMPS.
The P&O "Colombo" wrecked on Minicoy Island in the Indian Ocean on November 19th 1862 in a heavy fog. All of the passengers and crew were safely put into boats and were taken care of on Minicoy Island until they were rescued by the
"Ottawa" on Nov. 30th. The greater portion of the mail was recovered by divers, and, after careful drying, the letters were forwarded to their destinations. Those for London arriving either December 27th or 31st, 1862.

THE ONLY RECORDED 1862-63 1D LARGE STAR WATERMARK PRINTINGS BEARING THE 1864-67 TRIAL COMB 12½ PERFORATIONS.
According to Odenweller, the comb perforations were introduced in mid-1864 and remained in use in that form
until mid to late 1866. When the machine arrived, the current issue was that printed on NZ watermarked paper, with the most used denominations of 2d and 6d being perforated in relatively large numbers. However prior to being put into service, the
machine was used experimentally on copies printed on large star watermarked paper. Very few examples with these trial perforations exist and are distinguished by shade and/or plate wear from those that were printed later on large star watermark
paper. This strip of four of the 186-63 1d issue are believed to be the only surviving examples of this denomination. (Image1)

AN EXTRAORDINARY ON COVER
USAGE OF THE 1863 1D ISSUE ON PELURE PAPER - ONE OF TWO REPORTED ON COVER EXAMPLES AND A GREAT CLASSIC NEW ZEALAND RARITY.
With the relatively small demand for the 1d denomination, coupled with the brief use of the pelure paper issue, it
is quite likely only a single small printing was made. Pairs of the 1d stamp were used when the 2d was not available or when it was not convenient. This letter took two days from Wanganui to Wellington, probably an overland route instead of the
