Faulty, on yellow cover (Honolulu, Mar. 17, 1869) addressed to Isaac White, Philadelphia Pa. with red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp, tied by "San Francisco Cal. Mar 29" cds duplexed with circle of V's that ties U.S. 1867, 10¢ green, E. grill (89), well centered within large margins, manuscript "ships letter" at top left, reverse with "Philada., Pa., Received, Apr. 23" arrival cds; light soiling, F.-V.F., ex-Advertiser, signed by Ashbrook on reverse.

Cover carried on 17th contract trip by American steamer "Idaho" from Honolulu Mar. 17th to San Francisco arriving Mar. 28th. Entered mails with San Francisco Mar. 29th postmark for transmittal via overland mail. The lack of Honolulu markings and the ship letter endorsement indicates that this cover was mailed at the wharf.

S. Cleghorn" signature and "J.M.K." initials; some with usual minor soiling and one with small corner crease, a Very Fine and choice set, far better than normally encountered.

Cleghorn was the Postmaster General from May 1, 1887 to April 15, 1893 and was married to Princess Likelike. These stamps often show some staining caused by opium which leaked from the tin containers.
