28 ** imageSouth Africa 1925 'Air' set of 4 to 9d, right marginal blocks of 4, each showing value numeral, SG26/9.

A fine and fresh mint set of blocks with large part original gum. The 6d and 9d blocks each include two unmounted mint stamps. The 1d block with marginal re-inforcement. Overall, a very fine and most attractive set.

A very scarce set in this matching positional form.

The Union of South Africa airmail stamps depict de Havilland DH.9 biplane, a British single-engined biplane bomber developed and deployed during the First World War.

South Africa was slow to introduce an air mail service to speed up the delivery of local mail. Eventually, in 1925, the Civil Air Board in South Africa decided to institute a three monthly Experimental Air Service between Cape Town and Durban, to establish whether such a service could be provided economically and reliably.

This set of four Air Mail stamps were specially printed specifically for the Experimental Air Service that was inaugurated on 2 March 1925. The 9d was the highest denomination in the set. These stamps were only valid for the carriage of mail on the foregoing service.

The use of the 1925 Airmail stamps was discontinued at the end of June 1925 but remained for sale in Pretoria until 31 October. After that all residues of stamps, as well as the printing plates were destroyed.

327 C imageZanzibar 1934 (18 JAN) incoming airmail cover from Durban, South Africa with black/blue trilingual airmail label, underfranked by 1930-45 3d black and red (the rate being 5d) tied by despatch circular date stamp, with bold oval "T/40c" applied alongside to indicate double deficiency of 40 gold centimes.

On reverse, transit circular date stamp of Dodoma (20 JA 34) and Dar Es Salaam (22 JA 1934) in Tanganyika, and type KD13 Zanzibar arrival circular date stamp (23 JA 34).

The deficiency was paid on arrival by 1930-33 25c black/lilac postage due, SGD24 (6th setting, 1st printing, R2/2) applied to face and tied by light type R7 "REG./ZANZIBAR" circular date stamp (24 JA 34).

A very fine and neat cover other than trivial opening faults and much better quality than normally seen for covers of this nature. A lovely piece of complex postal history in the most attractive condition.

A rare and desirable cover being one of only 12 recorded with the 25c black/lilac.

Provenance: Ex John Griffith-Jones collection, and illustrated (as Fig. 11.33) on p.312 of his book. Census F.205.

On reverse, type D9 "ZANZIBAR" arrival circular date stamp of "NO 11 30" and Bank despatch (31 OCT 1930) and receipt (13 NOV 1930) Handstamp in violet.

On face, 1930-33 6c black/yellow (SGD21) postage due (first setting, R2/1), tied by "NO 12" type D9 circular date stamp, although the correct deficiency should have been 12 Zanzibar cents, and blue crayon '953' register number.

A fine quality piece despite some trivial blemishes, which are to be expected for a cover like this. An attractive and rare commercial usage, with few underpaid postcards known.

A wonderful and complex piece of Postage Due postal history.

Provenance: Ex Griffith-Jones (listed on p.465 of his book as census F.56), Sturton (Harmer Sept 2004, lot 1227) and Rowell (CRL 28 Oct 1992, lot 565).
