207 O imageNew Zealand 1909-26 'Dominion' 1d deep carmine, Cowan paper, showing the prominent 'Globe' flaw (Plate 12, R5/24), SG410d.

A fine used example with circular date stamp.

The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £50.

The first printing of this stamp on 1 January 1901 represented the introduction of a one penny universal postage rate for New Zealand. However, the United States, France and Germany refused to take them as they considered the rate too low. Contrary to such fears, the New Zealand Post Office saw an increase in mail volume to an extent which offset the loss of revenue from the lower rate.

517 b/4 imageNiue 1941-67 2s6d deep brown, 'Arms' type 17 overprint, watermark 43 of New Zealand, lower right corner block of 4, SG79.

A brilliant quality unmounted mint block with full original gum. The upper right stamp has a trivial gum bend but of quite astounding quality.

Niue became a British Protectorate on 20 April 1900 and was transferred to New Zealand control on 11 June 1901. There was considerable local resentment to attempts to incorporate Niue into the Cook Islands which resulted in the Island being recognised as a separate New Zealand dependency from 1902.

522 b/4 imageNew Zealand 1930 1d + 1d scarlet "Nurse", inscribed "HELP PROMOTE HEALTH", SG545.

A well-centred block of 4, neatly cancelled by complete and part strikes of WELLINGTON registered circular date stamps, dated "18 AP 31".

An attractive and uncommon multiple.

Owing to pressure of work being experienced by the plate makers in England there was insufficient time to produce printing plates for the new stamp design for this 1930 issue.

The only alternative was to prepare a plate with a similar design to the 1929 issue in New Zealand. Accordingly the Government Printer was instructed to prepare a plate with a similar design but with a new slogan ‘Help Promote Health’.

The original 1929 design had been completed by staff of the Government Printing Office who designed the frame for the stamp, the nurse image having been drawn by L C Mitchell.

The proceeds of the 'Charity' value of the 1930 Health stamps was donated to Children's Health Camps movement.

523 imageNew Zealand 1926-34 3s mauve, "Jones" paper, watermark upright, SG467.

A very fine mint example with large part original gum. A challenging stamp to find in such fine condition.

H L Richardson was asked to prepare a design similar to the 2s and 3s stamps that depicted King George V as an Admiral of the Fleet. It was recommended, however, that as General Sir Charles Fergusson - a distinguished soldier, had succeeded Viscount Jellicoe as Governor-General, it would be appropriate to depict the King in the uniform of a Field Marshall. The design was engraved by Waterlow and Sons, London. The stamp was in production from 1926-1935.
