2282 cover   image1917 (January 7), Kalkfield Rail, censored postal stationery cover to Windhoek, 1d red stationery envelope, cancelled by superb strike of "KALKFIELD / RAIL" rubber handstamp in violet, censor seal along top, obscuring the strike of the oval " - Windhoek" mutilated bahnpost hammer of German South West Africa, and Omaruru double-circle c.d.s. (8 Jan), a remarkably fresh cover, and an exceptional strike of this scarce marking.

The word "Rail" was added to the hammer at the end of 1916, with the result that the date is not symmetrical with the office name and decorative stars. The hammer being rubber, most recorded strikes show considerable wear, particularly as usage continued into 1917. (Image 1) (Image 2)

The Bethany strike was from the converted German colonial canceller. The original read "Bethanien Deutsch Sudwestafrika". The name "Bethany" is situated left of centre, as the "ien" of "Bethanien" was replaced by a crude y". "Deutsch" and all except "S." and "W" of "Sudwest" has been excised, ands the "k" in "Afrika" replaced with a small crude "c". (Image 1) (Image 2)

Spain
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
2290 cover   image1763 (February 7), Madrid to Gurmençon, Béarn, France, stampless folded letter from the French Embassy, manuscript "20" rate marking on front, routed via Bayonne and Pau, addressed to the Seigneur de Gurmençon, surface and edge wear with small tears along mailing folds reinforced with archival tape, else fine.

Written just days before the conclusion of the Seven Years' War with the Treaty of Paris, the letter reveals an active lobbying effort from a member of the French Embassy staff to assist his brother regarding the family's "moulins" (mills) in Gurmençon, mentioning correspondence with the astronomer Joseph-Jérôme de Lalande to exert influence on the local administration. Cynically, the sender notes the Spanish proverb "a muertos y a idos no ay mas amigos" (to the dead and the gone, there are no more friends). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5)
