The 1913 Prinz Heinrich Flug was a major pre–World War I German aviation competition held under the patronage of Prince Heinrich of Prussia to promote technical progress in flight. 155 CVR   imageLZ 62, 1916 (August 23), Ahlhorn to Hamburg, signed by Hans von Schiller, envelope posted by Leutnant zur See Hans von Schiller while serving as Wachoffizier with Kommando L-30, bearing his manuscript signature “von Schiller” above the printed officer’s handstamp, struck with violet circular Dienst Stempel / III. Gruppe and boxed Kommando L.30, cancelled by Ahlhorn (Oldenburg) c.d.s., a significant and very fine Feldpost usage linking an operational naval airship with the wartime signature of Hans von Schiller.

The L-30 was a major naval Zeppelin commissioned 28 May 1916, active on reconnaissance and bombing operations before final dismantling at Seerappen in 1920. Hans von Schiller (1891–1976) was one of Germany’s most celebrated Zeppelin officers, rising from a naval Wachoffizieron wartime airships such as L-30 to become a senior captain of the Graf Zeppelin (LZ-127) and later the Hindenburg (LZ-129) during the golden age of interwar flight. Revered for his skill, professionalism, and later his historical writings, he remains one of the iconic figures in the history of rigid airship aviation. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Brunner, a naval officer of the L-41 command, a fine and desirable wartime usage from the command of a front-line naval Zeppelin; the airship, commissioned 21 February 1917, served in reconnaissance and attack roles until its destruction by its own crew at Nordholz on 19 June 1919 to prevent surrender under the terms of the Armistice. 158 CVR   imageLZ 90, 1916 (March 20), picture postcard from Trier to Speyer, struck with a bold blue circular Kommando L.Z.90 / Brief-Stempel alongside a Trier despatch c.d.s. and violet boxed censor handstamp "Trier 1 F.K. zu befördern", the card a view of the Kaiserpalast at Trier, written by airshipman Hans Hawranke of Kommando L.Z.90 and addressed to his brother at Speyer, bearing Hawranke’s manuscript unit designation at upper left and signed “Hans,” a superb strike of this Zeppelin marking; the LZ-90, placed into service 1 January 1916, undertook bombing raids over England and reconnaissance on the Western Front, and on 11 November 1918 drifted uncontrolled over the North Sea after a storm near Windmundhafen (Ostfriesland), ending an operational life of barely ten months.
