LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
1140 O   imageImpressive horde of early-20th Century to modern-day Canadian tobacco tax stamps and related items, including about 200 colourful match covers in great condition for their age, with pre-printed excise tax paid stamp, and featuring many long-defunct restaurants and other businesses in and around the Bay of Quinte area, Toronto and elsewhere (difficult to confirm age, but rooms at the Quinte Hotel were "$1 and up"); a like-new catalogue featuring tobacco containers from Canada, the US and the world; several dozen cigarette packs displaying modern tobacco revenue stamps; hundreds of tear strips of various colours from cigarette packs, indicating federal and provincial origin; more than a dozen cigar and cigarette containers with stamps, including two older metallic containers; several hundred tobacco excise stamps showing provincial origin, stamp type, number of pieces of tobacco and different lettering identifier combinations, displayed in Vario pages and much loose. This accumulation would be very difficult to gather today. Given the fragile nature of some of the material, it is still fine to very fine. Ex Covert. 1141 O/ng   imageSeries "C" Tobacco Stamps, 1935-68, with cancels on cigar, manufactured, plug, and short strip stamps, plus new style short strips. These stamps are on 99 pages of mostly black stock sheets, with very little duplication, formed over decades by Earle L. Covert. A fascinating and still understudied area of philately, the contents include examples of most of the items issued in the period and many varieties, according to the Catalogue of Federal Tobacco Stamps of Canada, by Christopher D. Ryan. Our image gallery photos show all of the pages, ready to be updated and expanded with new information. Also includes some related literature. A rare opportunity.
