764 CVR   image1860 (December 1), London to Ecuador, stampless transatlantic folded letter via Panama, manuscript rated 2/- in red, postmarked with Lombard Street Paid c.d.s., manuscript “Tasmanian” ship notation at lower left, black Panama double split-ring neatly struck on front (27 Dec), light filing folds, else a very fine transatlantic letter to South America; the Tasmanian left Southampton December 3, but ran aground in thick fog at Totland Bay and returned to Southampton the following day; the letter instead would have been carried via the R.M.S. 766 CVR   image1867 (February 1), 1sh green (Plate #4) on transatlantic folded letter from London to Panama, franked with 1sh green, tied by LONDON -E ‘E-16’ duplex cancellation, with ‘A PANAMA’ (25 Feb) c.d.s. receiver at top, charged local postage of 10 centavos, marked by blue ‘10’ crayon at bottom, with contents written to the sender’s brother, reassuring him he would be welcomed back into the family business should his venture in Panama fail, quite fresh and very fine; the letter was likely carried on the R.M.S. Douro, which left Southampton on February 2, arriving at St. Thomas on February 18, and carried then on board the R.M.S. Tamar to Colon, where it arrived on February 26. (Scott #48, $400). 770 CVR   image1903 (August 29), “Lifeboat Saturday” Balloon Post postcard, split-back picture postcard depicting a balloon flying over the cliffs, with the inscription ‘Balloon Post’ and ‘From the Clouds 29 August 1903,’ flown on September 5 from Alexandra Palace in North London to Ongar, franked with ½d Edward VII, tied by London (6 Sep) squared circle cancellation, to Burton on Trent with a September 7 duplex receiver, forwarded to Rotherstoke, Rotherham, manuscript notation “Social Club, Manchester August 28, 03 Posted here and taken up by Balloon, then dropped and posted by finder,” a fine, extremely rare card; a total of 3,200 postcards were dropped at 16 points en route. 771 CVR   image1905 (April 7), First English Channel Balloon Crossing postcard, autographed by Jacques Faure, real photo silver gelatin print postcard depicting Jacques Faure with his dog ‘Dirigible’ and his cousin Hubert Latham on the left, standing by a large tube in an open field, a note on the address side references the photo: "Taken at 10:40 AM April 5, 1905," Faure inscribes in French on the image side: “Bien descendre pres Calais..” and signs “Jacques Faure 7 Avril, 1905” at the margin, addressed to Folkestone, Kent, franked with 10c French Sower issue, tied by both Gare de Calais and Folkestone c.d.s. (7 Apr), affixed at upper right with 1c Edward VII definitive, tied by same-day Dover to London c.d.s., some staining places, of little importance given the card’s rarity, one of only four examples carried by Faure from Folkestone to Calais on April 7th. Grahame White at the upper left, his autograph, and the date "July 2/10" at the upper right; the odd light mark, fine and rare. Claude Grahame White, known for making the world’s first night flight and his work in the commercialisation of aviation, also contributed to the promotion of military air power. Sam Cody postcard, black-and-white double-back postcard titled "Cody in Flight," depicting an early biplane and a portrait of Col. Cody at the upper right, franked with ½d Edward VII, tied by ‘Lanark Grand Stand’ c.d.s., a fine strike of this first airfield cancellation in U.K. postal history, used on occasion of the Scottish International Aviation Meeting in Lanark; Col. Sam Cody, a controversial early aviator, originally from the U.S. and later a naturalized British citizen, experimented with biplanes, taking many technical risks, and ultimately died in a crash in 1913. 777 CVR   image1937 (Dec 16) British Morrocco Agencies, ‘Damaged in the Mail’ cover to Portugal, franked with multiple French Currency surcharged issues, tied by “British Post Office” c.d.s., to Porto with “British Post Office Tangier” (17 Dec), Lisboa Central (21 Dec), and Porto Central (21 Dec) backstamps, manuscript notation on reverse ‘Encontrada rasgado do lado superior’ indicating the letter was found torn, explaining the use of two blue on white ‘PARA ABRIR’ Telegraph labels used as seals, further re-sealed with paper at left and bottom, one stamp also appears to missing, a curious item for the enthusiast of mail damaged in transit, this a particularly uncommon origin and destination.
