1255 PC   imageGroup of 160 Early Canadian Picture Postcards, mainly used to foreign destinations (Mostly to Holland, Belgium, France) with an interest both in postcards and postal history. 1257 CVR   image1871 Money Package Forwarded by the American Merchants Union Express Company Woodstock Ontario, with a red stamp on front of envelope plus three intact wax seals to Brantford. The money package enclosing $220.00 was sent with specific instruction that the consignee should "open the package at the end so as to preserve all the seals and observe whether they are in good order". A rare item. In 1850, Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield formed the American Express Company. In 1868, the company merged with Merchants Union Company to form the American Merchants Union Express Co. before the name later reverted to the American Express Co. which still trades to this day. A number of American Express companies established offices in Canada. Officially, they were not allowed to carry letters over Canadian Government post routes, but they could carry parcels and packages. They also transmitted cash under their own system of Money Packages. The American Merchants Union Express Co set up its Canadian HQ in Brantford Ontario in 1871. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)
