The cover is franked with all 5 stamps issued on that day (the 2a was issued later), and has four different air mail labels plus a boxed "FIRST DAY / OF ISSUE OF / AIR MAIL STAMPS", with Park Street registration label on back, plus an oval registration receiver dated NOV.30. 1574 CVR India imageAUG.10.1931 Croydon to Shanghai Flight by the American aviators Charles and Gladys Day, with two covers, both franked with a 1a KGV and ½a pictorial definitives and both addressed to Stephen Smith in Calcutta, both also have a handstamped date "3 SEP 1931", the day the couple actually left Calcutta. The first cover was flown from Calcutta to Rangoon bearing a photographic vignette of Mrs Day tied by the "American Flyers" 3-line cachet. Second cover is similar but with a different cachet in the shape of India. Both have a second strike of the purple cachet on back. Both very fine and scarce, with apparently only 14 covers flown. 1576 CVR India imageFEB.20.1932 Viceroy's Cup Aeroplane Race, a group of 6 covers flown in this race, from Delhi to Agra to Jhansi to Lucknow, back to Delhi. Each cover bears two blue and red labels prepared for the flight, one reading "TIME IS MONEY / USE THE AIR MAIL / TO ENSURE IT", tied by a two-line handstamp "FLOWN / FEB.20.1932". All are addressed to Stephen Smith in Calcutta and are franked with five copies of the 3r KGV definitive. 5 covers have two pilot signatures and one is signed by all 5 pilots (rare). Unfortunately 5 of the 6 were damaged by water and the labels are starting to come off, as well as warping and staining and the one that was not damaged has remnants of a melted elastic on its back. Backstamped Calcutta, Apr 27, with violet "Atlantis"/ Ichapur" cachet tying a red label, plus a black "Bertram - Atlantis Expedition" cachet. 1580 CVR India imageOCT.18.1932 Madras to Karachi First Flight Set Without Union Jack Flag, includes all 20 of the flight legs, to and from Ahmedabad, Karachi, Bombay, Bellary and Madras. These colourful covers were designed by Stephen Smith "by Sanction of Messrs. Tata Sons Ltd" with inscription on back reading "A Souvenir of a Great Indian Enterprise" and signed by Stephen Smith. The cover design was originally submitted with a Union Jack, which proved to be less than popular, so most of the stock was destroyed. Those that remained were meant for foreign collectors, and those without the flag for Indian collectors. All of these are addressed to Mr. Pont, care of several people in several cities.
