899 CVR PF8 imageAugust 15, 1918 Toronto to Ottawa Aerial Mail Flight, by Tremper Longman, R.A.F. in a Curtiss JN-4 "Canuck". He left Leaside Aerodrome at 9:45 a.m., refuelled at Desoronto and landed in Ottawa at 3:09 p.m. Cover is an "On His Majesty's Service" official envelope, has a Toronto slogan machine cancel (CNE Toronto) upper left and a purple "Postmaster / Toronto, Canada / AUG 15, 1918" handstamp. Also has a blue "By Aeroplane / AUG 15, 1918 / Ottawa, Canada" backstamp. Only 60 pieces were flown and as most were official correspondences not many have survived. 900 CVR PF8 imageAugust 17, 1918 Ottawa to Toronto Return Flight Cover flown by Lt. Tremper Longman, R.C.A>F. in a Curtiss JN-4 "Canuck". Stamp is tied by a faded strike of the "Aeroplane / Ottawa, Canada / Aug 17, 1918" handstamp that is just readable for the most part. Flight departed Ottawa at 6:50 a.m. and arrived in Toronto at 12:25 p.m. The cover and its enclosed letter is from P.E. Blondin, the Postmaster general and was sent to Mrs. Spraggs, the daughter of a former Postmaster General. Envelope is missing a piece at top left and has a tear at top, plus other minor faults, still a very scarce flight cover. (Scan a) (Scan b) (All Scans)

902 CVR PF27 imageJune 22, 1922 Lethbridge to Ottawa Flown Cover Plus Unused Envelope for Flight and Real Photo of the Aircraft, flown by Lt. Jack Palmer who signed this cover and Lt. Hugh H. Fitzsimmons. The plane was damaged at Minot ND trying to avoid a car that was driven in front of them while landing. The mail was forwarded by rail as the plane was too damaged to continue. 903 CVR PF27b imageJune 22, 1922 Lethbridge to Ottawa Flight Cover, Type III, cover only flown Lethbridge to Minot, ND. As the plane was landing, a woman drove a car in front of the plane. In avoiding the car, the plane was badly damaged and could not continue, so the letters were forwarded by train. Cancelled Lethbridge Jun 21, 1922 (machine slogan). These special envelopes were sold for $1 each and this one is addressed to the co-pilot Lt. Harry Fitzsimmons. Small piece missing in top left corner, else very fine, with advertising on back. 904 CVR   imageThe Sandy Denovan Collection of Manitoulin District Postal History, this is the main collection on pages, in three thick binders and consisting of about 400 covers and cards, from a great number of different offices, ranging from stampless to modern. We note a wide variety of postmarks including duplex, broken circle, c.d.s., RPO, machines, squared circles, Klusendorf, MOON, MOTO, POCON, and many more. Many of these offices were only open a short time, or were summer offices, and postmarks tend to be difficult to find. We noted some ERD and LRD, as well as only known strikes. A good proportion of the material is modern, but we noted many registered, Small Queen, rates and postmark usages (dispatch, transit and receiving), etc. See our scans online for an idea, or better yet view to better appreciate.
