1939 O/og/nh   imageJack Gray's "What's First?" Collection and Book. A fantastic written-up collection which was published as a book by the American Topical Association in 2018 (included with this lot). Also included are early proofs of the book with notes, etc. The very interesting 159 page collection is based on philatelic firsts or the world and is filled with value and information, with stamps, covers, imperforates, proofs, etc. with too many highlights to mention, but we have uploaded over 20 scans online. Some of the stamps have flaws, so inspection in recommended. 1940 O/og   imageJack Gray's "What's First" Ancillary Accumulation in a Stockbook, with some stamps obviously firsts, such as two (flawed) Penny Blacks, Switzerland #1075 (used, first embroidered stamp), Western Australia #1 (faulty), New South Wales #B2 ($350), etc. Many others have high catalogue value but have faults and it is not clear as to whether they are "firsts", as this was a work in progress. See scans for an idea, and better yet inspect. (Scan a) (Scan b) (Scan c) (All Scans)

LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
1942   image1908 "Preparing for a Balloon Ascension at Le Mans" black and white photographic print measuring 20 x 18 inches (image is 16 x 23½). A lovely print on Kodak paper showing Wilbur Wright in the basket of Leon Bollee's spherical balloon "Au Petit Bonheur" at Le Mans. Wilbur made this ascension with Renee Pelletier and Léon Carre (in photo). The photo was identified by Dawne Dewey, head of the Wright Brothers historical personal archives at Wright State University. She could not identify the photographer but she did say that it could only have been done by one of the personal photographers that the Wright brothers used, because these were their personal photographs. An important item, with great subject matter, stored in a non-smoking environment and suitable for framing. Offered in an archival quality PVC rigid sleeve. (Scan a) Est $ 75
