1141 Oc 285-93 #285-93, Trans-Mississippi Exhibition collection featuring the issued stamps and postal cards as well as collateral of the exhibition itself, contained in a large album that includes a complete set of the Trans-Mississippi stamps used with additional lower values showing various postmarks, plus 15 mint and used special postal cards issued for the exhibition with multicolor views including a complete mint set of ten cards, these are much less common than the analogous Columbian postal cards, in addition there are over 50 covers relating to the issue and the exhibition including an official cover and enclosure with bold seal of the fair from the publicity department, also includes illustrated covers of this exhibition and others, such as the Louisiana Industrial Exhibition of New Orleans, numerous advertising covers, several Spanish American Patriotic covers and covers with better Trans-Mississippi franking, an exceptional collection of this issue with most of the material being fine-very fine; certainly a collection any interested buyer will want to examine; ex-Bleuler. 1142 c 1901 Pan American Exposition collection of an interesting selection of material relating to this popular turn-of-the-century exhibition, features over 20 illustrated covers either for mailing at the fair or advertising the fair prior to its opening, many are multicolor including one with two 1c Pan Americans tied by exposition station cancel and another with 5c and 8c Pan Americans on attractive registered cover to Germany, includes another 11 covers related to the fair plus over 20 unused illustrated covers and seven letter sheets, also includes over 40 post cards including a mint set of ten official cards (analogous to the Columbian and Trans-Mississippi postal cards), there are three of these used with exposition station cancels, among the collateral of this exposition are trade cards, two full decks of playing cards and three lovely multicolor Singer folders with matching ornate envelopes, mostly fine-very fine; well worth examining for the unusual items contained here; ex-Bleuler. 1143 c 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair collection of a couple of hundred post cards and covers, this is the exhibition that made hold-to-light cards famous and included are three large size (220x149mm) cards including one showing a dirigible over the Machinery Building, plus nineteen normal post card size hold-to-light cards, other cards include attractive multicolor sets with excellent variety, we note ones with silver backgrounds and even some foreign made cards for this fair, also a handful of attractive multicolor cacheted covers for the fair, in addition there is other memorabilia including several large magazines, a full deck of playing cards, etc., condition varies but most are fine-very fine and an excellent collection of this popular exhibition; ex-Bleuler. 1144 c Exposition and fairs interesting accumulation of over 150 covers and cards plus other memorabilia, of greatest significance is the material from the 19th century expositions which starts with the 1876 Centennial Exposition which has a number of items including folders, two sets of ten pastel view cards and several unused illustrated envelopes, even a large size high relief medal of the exposition, then over 25 illustrated 19th century exposition covers, most with all over back designs which was the practice in this period, fairs include several 1870-80's St. Louis Expositions, 1870 Seventh Cincinnati Industrial Exposition, 1888 Minneapolis Industrial Exposition, 1888 San Antonio International Fair, 1889 Inter-State Industrial Exposition in Chicago, plus many more, also a few cards from the 1900 Paris Exposition including one with the United States Post office cancel in Paris, later cards and covers go to about 1915 and are usually the less known exhibitions, overall fine-very fine; a fascinating collection of seldom seen material; ex-Bleuler. 1145 c Major Expositions and World's Fair accumulation in a large box, starts with some material from the Trans-Mississippi Exhibition including fourteen postal cards with multicolor views including a full set of 10 (UPSS #EX89-98), then there are over 650 cards and 50 covers of major exhibitions of the 20th century starting with the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Oregon, sizable number of cards are found from the Jamestown Exposition, Alaska-Yukon and Hudson-Fulton and Panama-Pacific Expositions as well as later material from the 1926 Sesquicentennial and the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and others, also a smattering of various kinds of collateral from these fairs including a Trans-Mississippi medal, mostly fine-very fine and well worth examining; ex-Bleuler. ("4" inverted), to Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation, in the upper left corner is a stenciled "Wm. Musgrove/Baptist Mission, C N" with "Free" and "PM" added in manuscript, slight edge wear at right and a few trivial tone spots, very fine; an extremely rare post office that operated only from 1850 until 1866, only a few covers are known from this location and this is the only reported cover with a handstamp marking, the two or three others having manuscript postmarks; ex-Bleuler. 1148 c imageCantonment Gibson, Arkansas Territory (Cherokee Nation), red "Cant. Gibson, A.T./May 20" c.d.s (date in ms.) on 1828 folded letter to Col. R. Jones in Washington, D.C, datelined "Head Quarters 7th Infy./Cantonment Gibson/18th May 1828", written by Col. Mathew Arbuckle, first commander of this post, marked "On Service" and endorsed "Free", trivial fold splits, very fine and attractive; this is one of only two examples known of this marking, this was the first post office established in what is now Oklahoma; while it is listed under Arkansas Territory in the ASCC (and this marking is the basis of the illustration), in fact, on May 6th the western boundary of Arkansas was moved east of Cantonment Gibson so that on the date of this letter it was officially a part of the Cherokee Nation, unlike the other known cover with this marking that was applied when it was still a post office in Arkansas Territory; the importance and rarity of this cover cannot be overemphasized as this is the earliest posting out of any post office in Indian Territory and one of the great rarities of Oklahoma and the Indian Territories; ex-Chase, Beals and Bleuler. 1149 c imageCantonment Gibson, Cherokee Nation, neat entire 1842 folded letter with excellent strike of black "Cantonment Gibson/Jul 7" c.d.s. with matching "Free" handstamp, marked "On Pub. Service", the letter datelined "Head Qt. 1st Regt Dragoons/Camp at Fort Gibson, July 4th '42" reads "In compliance with instructions from the commg. General of the 2nd Dept., I shall leave here this day to resume command of the Post of Fort Leavenworth" and signed by Col. S. W. Kearny, for which Fort Kearny, Nebraska was named and who was known in his time as the "Father of the Calvary", he also marched against the Cherokees in 1839 with ten companies of dragoons, the largest mounted force ever assembled, plus he was named the military Governor of California after the Mexican-American war, an extremely fine historical letter with this rare marking; ex-Bleuler. 1150 c imageCherokee, Cherokee Nation, a large 1843 entire folded letter to Manchester, New Hampshire with beautiful strike of rimless "Cherokee/Cher. Nation/Sep 15 1843" c.d.s. with the "Sep 15" being inserted by hand in ms., datelined "Cherokee Baptist Mission, Sept. 14th 1843," even though this letter is lengthy, being in small type and written on a very large sheet of paper, it is marked "single" and rated "25" since it was just one sheet of paper, written by Sarah H. Hibbard, a missionary teacher at the school, to her sister making very interesting reading, minor fold splits and cover tear at bottom of little consequence, very fine; this very distinctive marking is one of the most impressive and attractive of the Indian Nations; extremely rare, this and the next lot being the only known covers with this attractive marking, this the earliest of the two; ex-Chase, Bleuler. 1151 c imageCherokee, Cherokee Nation, a companion 1844 entire letter from the same correspondence as the previous, this written by Sarah Hibbard to her parents in Gilford, New Hampshire, clear full strike of rimless "Cherokee/Cher. Nation/Feb 17 1844" c.d.s. with the "Feb 17" being inserted by hand in ms., datelined "Cherokee Baptist Mission, Feb. 3rd, 1844," this letter is also long and interesting telling of the trials of a young lady in the Indian frontier west, only a trace of edge wear, very fine and choice; there is some question whether the location of this post office was in Indian Territory or a few miles east in Arkansas, it was close to Westville, a later town that was in the Indian Territory, and there is no doubt from the cancel and the school serving the Indian community that they thought they were part of the Cherokee Nation; a beautiful and extremely rare cover, this and the previous letter being the only known covers with this marking; ex-Chase, Bleuler. 1157 c imageNew Echota, Cherokee Nation - Georgia, very lengthy entire folded letter from Rev. Samuel Worcester to his brother and sister and Rev. Thomas Savage in Bedford, New Hampshire, datelined "New Echota, Cherokee Nation, February 1, 1833", ms "25" rate marking and "New Echota Ga/Feb 4" manuscript postmark at left, trace of edge wear, very fine; Rev. Worcester was a missionary to and advocate of the Cherokees in Georgia, he starts this letter with "...you will learn, perhaps to your surprise, that I am no longer in prison", as he was heavily persecuted for his stand with the Cherokees and eventually moved to the Indian Territory when the Cherokees were removed from Georgia over the "Trail of Tear", Dr. Chase's note on the reverse reads "The only recorded cover from Cherokee Nation (of which New Echola was the capital) in the State of Georgia before the Cherokees were moved west/fully dated cover - an extreme rarity"; ex-Chase, Bleuler.
