1082 ogc Charles Magnus unused patriotic cover collection of over 275 illustrated covers featuring Civil War Generals and other famous men, over 120 are in attractive handpainted colors with another 90 in bronze or gold ink, there is an excellent selection of different Washington covers from simple to very ornate with multiple scenes including the Rose of Washington design, there are numerous different Generals with many of General McClellan, often in ornate frames with another member of his staff, similar designs with President Lincoln, there is also a nearly complete set in black of the "Secesh Chain" which has handsome lithographs of Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens and military officers that served with the Confederacy, includes 28 of the 30 portraits lacking only #9 and #24, excellent quality over all with only a very few with stains, nearly all fine-very fine or better; an exceptional collection of largely different designs that would be hard to duplicate today; ex-Bleuler. 1083 ogc Charles Magnus unused patriotic cover collection of Battle Scenes, includes over 175 marvelously attractive covers, this particular type is generally in full-side format making for beautiful illustrations, furthermore many of these were issued in series of up to twelve different numbered scenes of the same battle, some of these series are complete or nearly so, over 65 are in handpainted colors and another 95 are in Bronze or gold ink, a distinctive hallmark of Magnus, we note sets of twelve in bronze or gold of the Siege and Capture of Fort Donaldson and Movement of the Army from Washington to Richmond, plus a set of twelve in black of the U.S. Naval Expedition, also included in the hand-colored covers are fifteen out of 20 of the Camp Scenes from photographs, all are exceptionally attractive and we note only a tiny handful with minor flaws and virtually all of this type of design comes with Magnus imprint, choice very fine; ex-Bleuler. 1084 ogc Charles Magnus unused patriotic cover collection of attractive scenes of cities and buildings around the country as well as military installations such as forts and numerous hospitals, the collection includes nearly 250 covers with a large percentage being different, over 120 are in gorgeous handpainted colors and over 75 in bronze or gold ink, because of the subject matter many are in allover front designs, but there are numerous two-part designs with an allegorical figure or General accompanied by a scene of a city or a building, there are even similar five-part designs with four views, some are in series that are complete, or nearly so, such as Bird's Eye View of Alexandria, Va. or a fort or hospital that has three to five views, most have Magnus imprints, also includes three extra-large multicolor views on card, two with gold border, one is an extremely attractive view of Charleston harbor, an especially handsome collection, only two or three covers with stains, rest are fine-very fine or better; ex-Bleuler. 1085 ogc Charles Magnus extensive unused patriotic cover collection consisting of nearly 350 covers with a very large percentage being in beautiful handpainted colors, only about 60 in bronze or gold and less than 40 in single color inks such as black, lavender or green, this collection has a wide range of subject matter including allegorical female figures, male figures which are usually sailors or soldiers, also includes a number of different Eagles including an allover front example that has to be one of Magnus' most beautiful designs, also includes ones issued for both the Union and Southern States and even a few with military insignias, many with Magnus imprints, we note very few faults with virtually all being fine-very fine or better; certainly well worth examining as this is a marvelous collection of this popular and prolific publisher and seldom are such extensive collections seen today; ex-Bleuler. 1086 ogc Civil War unused patriotic cover massive accumulation of over 950 envelopes, while duplication does exist the range of different designs by various stationers is immense (no Magnus covers), we note over 70 Kimmel imprinted envelopes, many in colors, the number of different caricature envelopes is significant with some scarce items such as the "House that Sam Built" series of ten as well as the rare envelope with all ten designs on a single cover, there are also numerous generals and the normal range of various patriotic themes and allegories, though interestingly there are virtually no Flag only designs, any flags are with other figures or symbols, also includes over 30 CSA patriotic designs including nine multicolor Magee covers with Arms of the Confederate States and set of eleven states in blue by Upham, also includes seventeen multicolor lithographs of views of Washington and 25 cards with multicolor illustrations and long biographies of Union Generals; overall quite nice with only a very few stains or back faults from mounting, mostly fine-very fine; an excellent opportunity for the collector trying to collect all the different patriotic envelopes or the retailer; ex-Bleuler. 1087 Patriotic illustrated song sheets being largely a magnificent collection of different Charles Magnus sheets, there are over 300 Magnus song sheets plus three of his foldout song books with six songs in each, illustrated and colored like the individual sheets, some attempt has been made to categorize the Magnus sheets by illustration and they are mostly different, but as would be expected with this prolific publisher the same illustration can be on different songs and the same songs can have different illustrations, we note eight sheets with large battle scenes across the top accompanied by matching patriotic covers with identical illustrations, of the 300 Magnus sheets only about 30 are in bronze or black, all the rest are in hand colors; there is also another 50 song sheets of other publishers including Magee and others, overall most are fine-very fine; an amazing collection that would be hard to duplicate today; ex-Bleuler. 1088 Patriotic illustrated letter sheet collection with a total of over 150 mint letter sheets (also 25 or so used sheets not counted), some being single pages and some double sheets, over 80 sheets were produces by Charles Magnus with at least 60 of those in handpainted colors, includes two examples of the large Panorama of Washington enclosure, one cut into four sections, the other intact but with stains, an additional large letter sheet has the same large view of the Capitol at the top (same as the large view on the bottom of the Panorama sheet), most of the Magnus items have his imprint, then over 75 letter sheets by other publishers including Magee and others, we note a large Kimmel letter sheet showing six views of New York with a hand colored map of lower Manhattan, condition varies but most are fine-very fine; an excellent lot of Civil War patriotic letter sheets that are actually quite a bit scarcer than their cover counterparts; ex-Bleuler. 1090 ogc Sanitary Fair and Civil War postal history collection, an amazing mounted collection in three large red albums relating to charitable organizations that functioned during the Civil War to help soldiers and alleviate their suffering, includes over 25 unused patriotics and 50 covers, some of which are quite scarce and attractive, the unused patriotics include sixteen Charles Magnus designs, mostly full side illustrations in hand colors and largely devoted to hospitals serving the military, the covers span a wide range of themes including a half dozen used patriotics, sanitary fair covers including three for the actual fairs that were used to raise funds franked with 2c Black "Jacks" (#73), a few unused or mint sanitary fair stamps, plus numerous covers and stationery provided to the troops for correspondence home, even a letter from Clara Barton who was so active in charity work and ultimately organized the Red Cross, another section of importance are twelve P.O.W. covers coming into or going out of Union prisons, we note items related to Fort Delaware, Camp Douglas, Camp Chase, Elmira, N.Y. and Point Lookout, Md. with its prison and hospital, etc. includes some with handstamp and ms. censor markings, even a couple of CSA across-the-lines covers to prisoners in Union prisons, throughout is found considerable collateral such as tickets for the sanitary fairs, broadsides and announcements or menus for the fairs, plus engravings and pictures, we note one striking contemporaneous original 9"x7" photograph taken by E.L. Stark, Regimental Photographer of the 160th Indiana Vol. Infantry showing a man (for the sake of perspective) sitting on a totally unbelievable mound of human bones at Andersonville Prison in Georgia after it was occupied by Union forces (everyone that sees it says, "we knew Andersonville was bad but we didn't know it was like that."); a spectacular collection that needs to be viewed to be appreciated ex-Bleuler. 1092 c Union occupied territory Civil War postal history collection consisting of over 50 posted covers, plus letters and other collateral, throughout are eighteen used illustrated patriotic covers including some interesting and better designs including regimentals, another seventeen soldiers letters with some interesting markings such as a couple with Banks Division field post office cancels, ms. and straight line "Ship Island, Miss." pmks. where a Confederate P.O.W. camp for Union soldiers had been located prior to the occupation, the rest are covers from the various occupied locations, but we do note two CSA covers including a nice #1 on cover, occupied areas that are covered include Louisiana and Mississippi along the Mississippi waterway and including Tennessee which was accessed through this route, plus Florida and states along the east coast including Virginia, North and South Carolina, among the items of collateral are nine full-side Magnus unused patriotics that show locations and battles in occupied areas, some quite scarce, condition varies in the posted covers but many are fine-very fine and attractive; a fascinating and well written-up collection; ex-Bleuler. "Gillelands Creek, Texas/Febry 7th 1861" postmark, used in the very short period of time (one month, six days) while Texas was an independent state after the ordinance of secession was adopted on February 1st, and before it was admitted to the Confederacy on March 6th, interesting enclosure datelined on February 2nd "Gillelands Creek, Texas (Rep)" where he discusses the secession and says, "Texas is out of the Union", light staining at bottom of entire and slightly reduced at left, otherwise very fine and a great piece of Texas postal history; ex-Bleuler. 1098 c U.S. #U26 imageU.S. #U26, 3c Red, star die postal entire with "Hollandale/Tex/Mar 7" c.d.s. and circular grid, used a day after Texas was admitted to the Confederacy on March 6th, posted to Prairie Plains, Texas in Grimes county, then the cover was turned and posted to Martainsville, Va. on September 6, 1861 with Prairie Plains ms. pmk. and provisional "Paid 10" in manuscript, the later posting includes a long four page enclosure, cover opened on three sides with tear to backflap, fine and scarce usage in this four month period when U.S. postage could be used in Confederate Texas; ex-Bleuler. Mattoax, Va. pmk. and the other with similar ms. Chula Depot, Va. pmk. addressed to Mr. Charles H. Winston (school president), Richmond, Virginia, the latter with light stains affecting the stamp and tears to the back flap, fine-very fine; chartered in 1853, the school later became Richmond Women's College, the nucleus of Westhampton College; a nice pair of matched covers and very rare with the 10c Rose.
