650 og 52Aza image#52Aza, £1 Chocolate and dull blue, an enormously rare CA monogram single, fairly well centered, fresh rich colors, o.g., h.r., nearly very fine.Like other £1 and £2 monograms of the First and Second Watermark issues, the £1 Third Watermark issue monograms - either CA or JBC - are great rarities. Of CA monograms, only four are recorded, two of which are institutionalized. There are two mint strips of three, one of which is in the Royal Collection, and there are two mint singles, one in the R.P.T. Chapman Collection, now part of the Australia Post archival collection. The CA monogram single offered here, therefore, is one of only two in private hands. According to the ACSC, "all examples seen have the monogram (CA or JBC) trimmed at bases to a greater or lesser extent".Another remarkable monogram rarity from the Gray Collection that may not be available again for a generation or more (A$45,000). SOLD for $57,500.00

651 og 52Ba/zb image#52Ba/zb, £1 Chestnut and blue, watermark inverted, the highly important JBC monogram single, wonderfully fresh and bright, well centered, o.g., minor h.r., very fine and quite choice. The JBC monogram on the £1 Third Watermark issue ranks among the rarest of all the important monogram pieces. Only three examples are recorded - all mint singles - one of which is in the Royal Collection, leaving only this remarkable single and one other (ex-Colonel Evans) - both with inverted watermarks. As with all CA and JBC monograms of this value, the monogram is slightly trimmed at bottom, but to a much lesser degree than the others. To offer bidders some idea of pricing history, the JBC monogram single with an inverted watermark realized A$39,600 (including premium) in the May 2001 auction (Premier Philately) of the Colonel Harrie Evans Collection - well before the price explosion and full appreciation of the rarity of most high value monogram pieces occurred (A$45,000).
