543 c 61X4 image#61X4, Nashville, Tenn., 5c Gray on gray blue ribbed paper, single in the distinctive gray shade, three large margins, just in at right, tied to attractive seven-star Confederate flag in colors patriotic cover with Jas. L. Gow imprint (Dietz #F7-16), to Shelbyville, Tennessee, clear strikes of blue "Nashville/Ten./Oct. 12, 1861" c.d.s. and matching "Paid" straight line handstamp, both tie the stamp to the cover, soiling on the reverse but very fresh and attractive on the front, a very fine and rare usage; the gray provisionals are the scarcest of the 5c values, frequently coming faulty or cutting the designs, they are particularly rare on cover and patriotic covers are not even listed in Scott or Dietz for this stamp, a wonderful and extraordinarily rare cover for the Nashville collector. 547 c 62X4 image#62X4, New Orleans, La., 5c Red brown on bluish, wonderfully choice four-margin single with deep color on strongly blued paper, tied to cover that originated in Nashville with blue "Nashville/Ten./Oct. 9, 1861" c.d.s. at left, light blue "Paid" straight line handstamp plus stamp affixed over matching "10" rate marking, stamp applied in payment of forwarding to Woodville, Mississippi and tied by "New Orleans/LA/29 Oct" black c.d.s. (stamp lifted and hinged in place to reveal the rate marking), cover has docketing at top making note of the content of the enclosure, which is included, cover with staining and edge wear with large portion of back flap missing, stamp is extremely fine; this New Orleans Provisional on cover is readily available but the usage is decidedly rare as we have never seen another where a New Orleans Postmaster Provisional was used to pay forwarding postage. 548 c 1, 2 image#1, 2, 5c Green and 10c Blue, four general issue covers from Nashville, these two values being the only general issue Confederate stamps used in Nashville before it was occupied by Union troops in February 1862, we note a 5c Green single franking on local cover being 3c overpaid, another with 5c Olive green on light gray overall advertising cover, then two 10c Blue covers, one on double rate "Official Business" cover to Camp Cheatham (stamp is attractive four margin example), the other is on a folded letter to Petersburg, Virginia, datelined "London (England), 28th November, 1861", no other markings than the Nashville c.d.s. tying the stamp and apparently carried covertly across the lines, all covers and stamps, except as noted above, with faults, but fine and interesting usages.
