1913-1915 PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1041 E 398-E2 image#398-E2, 2c Panama-Pacific, designer's model consisting of two photos, one for the outer frame and one for the vignette, overlaid to make a composite design with wash touch-up to the vignette and drawn in "2" denominations in white wash, this is the design that has "Gatun Locks" under vignette, which was in error as this was really the Pedro Miguel Locks, but the design was approved this way and production went so far as actually printing the stamps before the error was discovered, mounted on thick grey card measuring 99x72mm, inscribed and signed "Approved Aug. 27, 1912/Frank H. Hitchcock/Postmaster General", very fine; a unique original model approved for production, but ultimately rejected; C.A. Huston, designer. (Image) $1,500.00

SOLD for $1,400.00
Will close during Public Auction
1042 E 398-E2 var. image#398-E2 var., 2c Panama-Pacific, designer's model, an almost identical model to the previous model of the "Gatun Locks" error, made in the same way with slightly different touching-up of the vignette photo and similarly drawn in "2" denominations in white wash, mounted on thick grey card 107x86mm, neatly inscribed in calligraphy "Bureau of Engraving and Printing/Approved" with handstamp signature of the Director, J.E. Ralph, very fine; a unique original model that was approved, but the design was finally rejected; C.A. Huston, designer; 1990 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $1,300.00
Will close during Public Auction
1043 E 398-E3 image#398-E3, 2c Panama-Pacific, large die essay on India, in carmine die sunk on full size card measuring 202x152mm, the completed design as adopted except the title under the picture reads "Gatun Locks" instead of "Panama Canal" as was eventually issued, very faint stain at left of card, not affecting the proof, very fine; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, engraver; control number 551185 (1912)This unissued design is actually an error that was not discovered until the stamps fully went into production. This design was approved and twelve plates were assigned and produced. They were put to press as they were ready and literally thousands of impressions were made from a number of these plates before it was discovered that the vignette was of the Pedro Miguel Locks, not the Gatun Locks. All the stamps that had been printed were destroyed, although proof sheets are still in the National Postal Museum. The die was changed to read "Panama Canal" and the 2c value was issued as we know it. Brazer's listing for this proof was originally for a small die essay on India which he believed to be unique. However, he was aware of three large die essays at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The large die essay offered here is now believed to be the only example in private hands in this desirable large format. Certainly a wonderful essay for anyone building an exhibition collection and tracing the history of the Panama-Pacific issue. (Image) $6,500.00

SOLD for $9,000.00
Will close during Public Auction

Hitchcock/Postmaster General", very fine; no handwork is done on this model because they already had an engraved design that was correct except for the inscription; a unique original model approved for production; C.A. Huston, designer. (Image) $1,500.00

1914 PROPOSED COMMEMORATIVES
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1056 E 537-E1-2 var. image#537-E1-2 var., 1914 2c-5c Peace, large die essays on wove paper, 2c is in deep red and the 5c is in dim dusky g-b-blue, die sunk on large cards measuring 201x138mm, an unissued set that was prepared to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Peace between English-speaking people, it was intended that Great Britain would issue similar stamps for their country, the advent of WWI caused the issue to be delayed as a peace issue was not appropriate while war was engulfing the world and eventually the project was scrapped, Brazer listed these under #537 though there was only vague relationship between what was intended in this proposed issue and and the Victory in WWI, signed by Harry S. New, Postmaster General, few spots of toning on the reverse of the 2c not affecting the front or the proof, very fine and handsome pair of proofs; Harry New was not Postmaster General when this issue was proposed, Albert S. Burleson was the Postmaster General who approved the designs, accompanying is a photocopy of a letter of Harry New on official stationery dated February 19, 1929 explaining the history of this issue and the origin of these proofs, stating in it that the approved designs were being held in the vaults of the Bureau but that he had ordered five sets to be printed and that was the origin of these proofs, it is interesting to note Brazer lists control number 661396 on a 2c he had seen, which would have been produced in 1913 and would have been on India, whether the 5c exists thus is not known, by virtue of when these were printed they are on wove; a very rare and interesting set; C.A. Huston is presumed to have been the designer; control numbers 158151, 158147 respectively (1929). (imagea) (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

Huston, presumed to be the designer; control number 932945; also handstamped on reverse "Jan. 7-1919". (Image) $2,000.00

Schofield", our records show that Schofield was the frame engraver, not the vignette engraver, very fine; listed as unique by Brazer citing this specific control number; C.A. Huston, designer; G.F.C Smillie, vignette engraver; control number 1060826 (1920); ex-Johl. (Image) $1,500.00
