1912-1914 WASHINGTON-FRANKLIN ISSUES continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1381 P 406P1 image#406P1, 2c Carmine, large die proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x202mm, a pristine proof of this new design for the 1c and 2c values, replacing the word denomination with numerals, Bureau control number carefully removed from the bottom of the reverse, extraordinarily fresh with radiant carmine color, extremely fine; our records show that there are believed to be only two known examples of this large die proof in public hands, one of these is the F.D. Roosevelt proof on wove paper, therefore it quite probable that this is the other proof and making this the only large die proof of this value on India available to collectors; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (Image) $1,400.00

SOLD for $1,000.00

1382 P 414P1 var. image#414P1 var., 8c Olive green, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size immaculate card measuring 152x202mm, this being the special proof prepared for President F.D Roosevelt; extraordinarily clean and fresh, possessing lovely deep color and detailed impression, extremely fine; our records indicate that this one of only two die proofs in the issued color known to be in collectors' hands; the Roosevelt proof is the only one that is on wove paper by virtue of when it was pulled and is therefore unique; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 329717 (1933); ex-Roosevelt. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $900.00

1383 P 417P1 image#417P1, 12c Claret brown, large die proof on India, measuring 71x98mm showing a large portion of the die area with some overage at bottom where the control number has been applied to the front, not being die sunk on card and probably was not when it was printed, intense deep color with attractive die wash in the white area, extremely fine; in many respects this appears to be a Southgate proof, but there are three things that argue against that conclusion, Southgate proofs were only of commemorative issues on wove paper and pulled in 1934, this is a regular issue on India and pulled in 1922, twelve years before the Southgate proofs were made, certainly an interesting proof of the greatest rarity; this and a similar 30c value in the next lot are the only two examples of regular issues done in this manner that we have encountered; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 1154576 (1922); ex-"Georgetown". (Image) $1,400.00

SOLD for $900.00

1384 P 420P1 image#420P1, 30c Orange red, large die proof on India, measuring 72x98mm showing a large portion of the die area with some overage at bottom where the control number has been applied to the front, a similar proof to the 12c Claret brown in the previous lot, probably not die sunk on card when it was printed, radiant color, ink mark on India and faint diagonal India crease, neither close to the design, very fine; quite probably the only large die proof in this format of this value; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 1154802 (1922); ex-"Georgetown". (Image) $1,400.00

SOLD for $850.00

1385 P 405P2a-23P2a image#405P2a-23P2a, 1c-$1.00 1912-14 Washington-Franklins, "Panama-Pacific" small die proofs on wove paper cplt., measuring about 23x26mm. an incredibly rare complete set of twelve values, this being the last stamp issue before the Panama-Pacific Exposition and the issue that was in current use, uniformly large even margins throughout, a few values with a hint of light characteristic toning but in much fresher condition than is usually encountered with "Panama-Pacific" proofs, 12c with trivial corner crease entirely in the margin, a very fine set; only 3-5 of each "Panama-Pacific" small die proofs were issued, and this may be the only complete set of these still intact; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (imagea) (imageb) (Image) $14,400.00

SOLD for $11,000.00

1386 P 414P2a image#414P2a, 8c Olive green, Panama-Pacific small die proof on wove paper, measuring 24x27mm, an extraordinarily fresh example showing only a faint trace of the characteristic toning on the reverse, the front is beautiful with brilliant color on quite bright paper for this, extremely fine; very rare; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (Image) $1,200.00

1918 TWO AND FIVE DOLLAR FRANKLIN
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1387 E 523-E2 image#523-E2, Benjamin Franklin vignette, large die essay on India, in black, die sunk on card measuring 151x103, this is an engraving of the Franklin portrait used on the $2.00 and $5.00 high values, only the head is complete with no shading in the background, written in pencil on the reverse is "Mr. Schofield", the vignette engraver, and in addition to the control number a "May 14, 1917" handstamp has been applied, extremely fine; a lovely engraver's essay pulled to check the progress of the engraving; undoubtedly unique in this state of the engraving; listed but unpriced by Scott; C.A. Huston, designer; L.S. Schofield, vignette engraver; control number 834424 (1917). (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $1,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
1388 E 523-E3 image#523-E3, Benjamin Franklin vignette, large die essay on wove paper, in black, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x151, similar to the previous essay of the Franklin portrait, now with the shading in the background completed and apparently in a finished state as used on the $2.00 and $5.00 high values, written in pencil at bottom on the front is "Schofield", the vignette engraver, "May 28, 1917" handstamp on the reverse, two weeks after the unfinished essay was pulled, the proof paper is loose at top right causing a diagonal crease and tear in the top right corner, small abrasion spot to vignette, fine; this is a most unusual proof as it is the first die proof that we have encountered that was pulled on wove paper prior to 1925, though this paper is a darker and coarser paper than the later wove paper; this also possesses the control number quoted by Scott's India listing, but this is definitely wove; our records show another essay apparently in this same finished state that was pulled on July 7, 1917, so it may yet exist on India; all of these were printed for Schofield and each is of great rarity; C.A. Huston, designer; L.S. Schofield, vignette engraver; control number 837662 (1917). (Image) $1,000.00

1922-1925 REGULAR ISSUE
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1389 E 551-E1 image#551-E1, 1/2c Nathan Hale, large die essays on India, a collection of the eight different trial color die sunk proofs on full size cards measuring 152x203mm, the engraving is an unfinished impression of the approved 1/2c Nathan Hale low value of the 1922-25 Regular issue, the name tablet below the portrait is blank and various shading lines are lacking in the vignette, this collection constitutes the eight colors listed in Scott, less the issued color, in the front right corner is marked in pencil the value that had used or would use that color in this regular series, they include 1c deep green, 2c carmine, 6c red orange, 9c rose, 10c yellow, 11c light blue green, 13c yellow green and 20c carmine rose, a marvelous set of these listed colors, uniformly extremely fine; undoubtedly the only known examples in public hands of these colors in handsome full size die proofs; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control numbers in order 1321677, 1321665, 1321675, 1321669, 1321676, 1321673, 1321670, 1321664 (1925); ex-Finkelberg. (Image) $22,000.00

1390 E 551-E2 image#551-E1, 1/2c Nathan Hale, large die essay on India, in issued olive brown, die sunk on full size card measuring 149x201mm, a virtually complete design as issued except in the white oval immediately around the head, just above the ends of the name ribbon there are three lines of shading on each side in the issued design that are missing here, this is so complete that in fact this proof has been approved and signed by Postmaster General, Harry S. New, control number removed from the reverse, most trivial wrinkle along left edge of card, fresh and extremely fine; this proof is accompanied by 1942 invoice note of Clarence W. Brazer to long-time Detroit collector, C.A. Hutchinson, in it he says "Have just discovered it and must be unique", a wonderful essay for anyone building a collection of the Half Cent Nathan Hale; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver. (Image) $1,350.00

1391 E 567-E2 image#567-E2, 20c Yosemite Falls vignette, large die essay on India, in cobalt blue, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x202 with untrimmed India, unadopted vignette of Yosemite Falls with the unadopted frame cut away by removing a small portion of the India, "Nov. 23, 1922" pencil date at bottom of card, light stain at top of card, very fine; a most unusual essay, it is speculated by specialist Gary Griffith that vignette engraver, Charles Chalmers was given this essay and a similar one of the accepted 25c Niagara Falls vignette in the next lot as samples of his work, Griffith also reports that there are two such essays known of each value, this one being especially important because it is of an unadopted design; C.A. Huston, designer; C.M. Chalmers, vignette engraver; control number 1184382 (1922). (Image) $2,500.00

1392 E 568-E2 image#568-E2, 25c Niagara Falls vignette, large die essay on India, in issued green, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x202, a very similar essay as the previous lot, this being the adopted vignette for the 25c value and the frame removed by cutting away all of the surrounding India, faint partially erased "Sept. 20, 1922" pencil date at bottom right, very fine; apparently used by vignette engraver, Charles Chalmers, as a sample of his work, only two such essays believed to exist,; C.A. Huston, designer; C.M. Chalmers, vignette engraver; control number 1174692 (1922). (Image) $2,500.00

1394 P 551P1-73P1, 622P1a-23P1a image#551P1-73P1, 622P1a-23P1a, 1/2c-$5.00 1922-26 Regular issues, large die proofs on India cplt., each die sunk on full size card measuring 152x202mm or 202x152mm, all are on India except for the 13c and 17c later issued values which are on wove paper, both being pulled and approved at the end of 1925 after the Bureau discontinued using India and started using wove proof paper, it is quite likely that they do not exist on India, the $5.00 is a hybrid that has an India proof mounted on a yellow bond in the die sunk area and is the way all contemporaneous approval proofs of the $5.00 were made that we are aware, this constitutes the complete approval set presented to President Calvin Coolidge, each is dated just prior to when the particular value was issued and signed by the Postmaster General that was in office at that time, these included mostly Hubert Work, plus Harry S. New and acting P.M.G. John H. Bartlett, all are especially fresh and crisp, remarkably free of the usual blemishes and flaws that are typically found on large die proofs as a matter of course, only the 14c Dark blue has a small corner crease to the card, extremely fine and quite possibly the finest full set in public hands.Harry New presented to President Coolidge a set of die proofs for all the stamps that were issued during the Harding-Coolidge presidencies of which President Coolidge was a part, either as Vice-President or President. This set of of the 1922-26 Regular issues made up the heart of that collection. Other proofs from this presentation are included in the Livingston collection and are so noted. Included with this set is a letter on Postmaster General stationery dated only "March One" stating that this complete set of proofs was prepared for President Coolidge at the Postmaster General's direction and signed by Harry S. New. The year of that letter was probably 1929, just before both New and President Coolidge left office. Interestingly, for all the publicity that Harry New received for ordering late pulled proofs in 1928-29, the collection that was given to President Coolidge was largely original proofs with few exceptions. This can be determined by the control numbers, which can be dated. All of the proofs in this regular issue set are original proofs. This set is not only an immensely rare set of this popular issue of stamps, but it also carries with it a tremendous historical heritage. C.A. Huston, designer; vignette engravers include John Eissler, M.W. Baldwin, Fred Pauling, L.S. Schofield, L.C. Kauffmann, E.J. Hein and C.M Chalmers; control number in order of values 1322278, 1181462, 1319858, 1176368, 1195580, 1178121, 1176109, 1182887, 1215565, 1212373, 1184457, 1185331, 1175153, 1203185, 1363188, 1208112, 1176157, 1360805, 1211990, 1175565, 1201695, 1172987, 1189546, 11965458, 1198135 (1922/1925). 1396 TC 622TC1 image#622TC1, 13c Harrison, large die black proof on wove paper, die sunk on large size card measuring 146x171mm, a lovely example of this striking proof from the collection of John Eissler, this black color accentuates the detail of the engraving, very clean and fresh, choice very fine and rare; our record of Eissler proofs indicates that there is only one other black proof of this value in collectors' hands; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70140; ex-Eissler. (Image) $2,250.00

1397 P 623P1a image#623P1a, 17c Black, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 202x153mm, this being from the special large die proofs prepared for President F.D. Roosevelt, exceptionally fresh and clean, extremely fine in all respects; this die proof is only listed by Scott on India and not on wove; in fact it is our opinion that this value only comes on wove and not on India because even the contemporaneous approved proofs were issued in late 1925 when the Bureau was using wove not India proof paper; however this proof is the unique example being from the Roosevelt collection, C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 332960 (1933); ex-F.D. Roosevelt. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1398 P 623P1a image#623P1a, 17c Black, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on large card measuring 152x114mm showing the full die sinkage, attractive example of this proof with only a few minute tone specks on the wove proof paper, otherwise clean and very fine; only listed by Scott on India and not on wove, but this is another example that demonstrates that it is most probable that this only comes on wove, C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver. (Image) Est. 750-1,000
