MacEwen & V.S. McCloskey, designers; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 198058B (1957). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1347 E 1140-E image#1140-E, 4c Benjamin Franklin Credo, hand drawn model on tracing paper, in red, blue and white ink, drawing of an unaccepted design, not exactly as the issued design with different symbol at left and different signature of Benjamin Franklin, but overall a very similar design to what was issued, signed by Frank V. Conley, the designer of the Credo issue, slight staining in the right half of the paper and a bit of paint chipping in the top label, very fine and an incredible art model of a fairly modern issue; unlisted in Scott and certainly unique; F.V. SOLD for $500.00

1348 P 1178P1 var. image#1178P1 var., 4c Fort Sumter, large die proof on stiff yellowish bond, a most unusual die proof, not being the usual engraver's proof, mounted on a die sunk card with typed "Approval of engraving and color hue:/Postmaster General," but not signed, on the reverse the card has some thinning from double sided tape, apparently having been mounted, there are normal color pencil notations, plus pencil "Approved Die Proof", control number is written in ballpoint pen and is appropriate for the period with handstamp "Stock" beneath it, an attractive proof of a most unusual nature, very fine; this 1961 proof is not only the latest issued stamp in the Livingston collection, but it bears the latest recorded stamp Bureau control number recorded in public hands, Scott lists this on India but this is most certainly the item referred to; undoubtedly the only die proof of this issue available to collectors; C.R. 1353 P 300P1-13P1 image#300P1-13P1, 1c-$5.00 1902-03 Regular issue, large die proofs on India complete, a magnificent matched set of large die proofs, each die sunk on full sized cards measuring approximately 147x198mm, all are in exceptionally clean condition, lacking the spots, blemishes and toning that are found on large die proofs of this era, only a few mounting marks or hinge remnants separate this set from perfection, a set that possesses tremendous eye appeal, extremely fine; our records show that there are believed to be only two complete sets of large die proofs on India in public hands (plus the set of F.D. Roosevelt proofs on wove), one is the set of approved die proofs that was sold in Shreves Philatelic Galleries' 2002 sale of the Roger S. Brody collection, realizing a total of $33,000.00 (including premium), and this set, which is actually the better condition set, lacking the flaws of having been bound and removed from an album and the faults that were present to a few values; a lovely rare set in the finest condition available; R.O.
