827 nh 1789B image#1789B, 15c John Paul Jones, perforated 12, a pristine top left corner sheet-margin example of this important modern rarity, well centered, unblemished o.g., n.h., extremely fine; the Fifteen Cent John Paul Jones commemorative was issued in 1979, printed by the J.W. Fergusson & Sons Co., and first perforated 12 x 12 by the American Bank Note Company, however the horizontal pins broke after only one day's use and were replaced by perf. 11 pins (creating the 11 x 12 perf. variety) and later the perf. 12 vertical perforating pins were replaced by 11 pins (resulting in the 11 x 11 variety); to date, only four sheets of 50 each (200 stamps) have been reported of the perforated 12 variety, making this one of the rarest stamps in United States philately; the example offered here comes from position one from a sheet first discovered in 1989 and has remained intact until very recently; photocopy of a 1989 PF certificate for the original intact pane of fifty.
