71 ogPB 56 var. image#56 var., 3c "August", the incredibly rare shade variety in "scarlet", an impressive full bottom margin imprint and plate "No. 2" block of eight, wonderfully fresh and crisp, overall well centered, especially when one considers how poorly centered these stamps can come, exceptionally rich brilliant color and a prooflike impression, full pristine o.g., quite lightly hinged in the top row, bottom row is never hinged, light sensible hinge reinforcement of the perfs. at top with just a few separated perforations at the top of the center vertical row, a choice and very fine plate block; it is not commonly known that this most readily available of the "August" values comes in several different shades of red since the typical brown rose is almost always the shade that is seen, the others being extremely rare despite the conflicting values quoted in Scott, this plate block has traditionally been called scarlet from when it was first offered and is noted that way in the Chapin census, by Scott listing it is one of the orange red shades, the rarity of this is evidenced by how seldom even singles of any shade other than brown rose are seen, as a plate block it is enormously rare being the only known plate block in a shade other than rose brown out of a population of a mere six plate blocks (all bottoms) that are recorded in the Chapin census for all shades; furthermore this plate block has always brought a premium price above catalog value in the two times it has been offered in auction, the last time being over 20 years ago in the 1985 Siegel Rarities of the World Sale where it was sold to the current owner for $16,000.00 plus 10% buyers premium, when the catalog value for a normal brown rose shade was $15,000.00, an immensely important rarity for the serious plate block collector; Chapin census #180.
