102 O 479, 480 image#479, 480, $2.00 Dark blue and $5.00 Light green, a single of the former and a horizontal strip of three of the latter (natural s.e. at right), tied to a large piece of a registered wrapper along with single examples of 2c Rose red (#463), 5c Blue (#466), 20c Light ultramarine (#476) and $1.00 Violet black (#478) making another impressive franking from this foreign correspondence, all tied by Foreign Station, N.Y. ovals, this piece is dated April 6, 1917, the earliest documented usage for both the $2.00 Dark blue and the $5.00 Light green, light purple New York, Foreign branch registry c.d.s. at bottom left, small faults to the piece which have largely left the stamps unscathed, otherwise very fine; finding the earliest documented usage of an issue is a difficult task, but it is real find when one item represents the earliest documented usage for two different stamps, especially ones that are as important as these two high values; a perfect exhibition piece to go with the matching 50c Light violet earliest documented usage above; 2000 APS certificate. Farwell Company, dated October 24, 1916, the earliest documented usage with this perforation by Chicago, Ill., Canal Station machine cancel which neatly ties the stamp (lifted for identification and hinged in place), extremely fine; the private perforations of the Farwell Company are exceptionally scarce on cover, particularly in this stellar condition, however this cover is especially important in that it predates any imperforate #482 from sheet stamps or with other private perforations by over three weeks; a great rarity for the collector of either the earliest documented usages or of affixing machine coils; 2004 APS certificate. III perforations, bright single (with pre-printing paper fold), tied to window envelope with shield corner card of Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., stamp tied by well applied Chicago, Ill. machine cancel, November 2, 1917 earliest documented usage for the Schermack affixing machine coil, this company had apparently used the Schermack affixing machine to send out there invoices or business letters, this date is also the first day of the 3c wartime letter rate, and the first date on which the 3c stamp would be in normal usage, this also predates the earliest documented usage of the normal #483 sheet stamp by six days and is very close to the Issuance date of October 13, 1917 listed by Scott (Scott lists Oct. 2,1917 as earliest documented usage, but that is in error, it should be this Nov. 2, 1917 date) , stamp lifted for proper identification and hinged in place, minor cover flaws, fine and attractive; 2001 APS certificate. O. Siebold, Washington, D.C. special delivery duplex on the reverse, very fine and choice; this high value coil was the last issue of the Washington-Franklin series, produced barely before the inauguration of the 1922 series, and was issued well over two years after the other coil denominations; collectors are beholding to Mr. Hammelman for the few known examples of this major first day cover rarity; this is the largest known multiple on FDC, Scott value for single is $5,000.00; 2003 APS certificate. 119 O 498d image#498d, 1c Green, double impression, an extraordinarily rare used vertical strip of three of this impressive variety, exhibiting two complete and distinctive impressions of the design, stamps have strong rich color, centered to the right, tied to small piece by two impressions of 1919 Philadelphia, Pa. machine cancel, fine; while the month and day cannot be deciphered this is quite likely the only dated used example of this variety that exists and therefore the earliest documented usage by default; the truth be known this is far more rare used than mint, in fact this is only the second certified used example we have ever seen, the other being an undated used single that realized $3,000.00 plus 10% buyers premium in Shreves March 7-8, 2003 Collector's Series Sale; catalogs $7,500.00 as three used singles; 1985 PF certificate.
