United States Stamps continued...

1867 GRILLED ISSUES continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
181 O 100 image#100, 30c Orange, "F" grill, a highly desirable used example of one of the most challenging stamps of the 19th century to find in true premium condition and free of flaws so often associated with this value, possessing virtually perfect centering amid considerably larger margins than usual, strikingly intense color in a much deeper shade than commonly seen, black segmented cork cancel, extremely fine; the Scott catalog states, "Values for No. 100 are for copies with small margins, especially at sides. Large-margined examples sells for much more."; 1998 PF certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $850.00

SOLD for $900.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:48 AM
182 O 100 image#100, 30c Orange, "F" grill, select used example of this very scarce and challenging stamp to find in true premium condition, possessing outstanding centering within large margins (with its perforations essentially clearing the design all around), rich luxuriant color in a much deeper shade than typically encountered, light face-free cancel at bottom, extremely fine; a terribly elusive stamp in this condition; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) $850.00

SOLD for $1,500.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:49 AM
183 O 101 image#101, 90c Blue, "F" grill, a highly select used example of this truly rare high value, being in a condition that is far superior to most existing copies, featuring outstanding centering amid exceptionally wide margins, plus its color is particularly deep and luxuriant on bright fresh paper, neat segmented cork cancel, extremely fine and a beautiful used copy; 1999 PF certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $1,750.00

SOLD for $2,800.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:49 AM
1875 RE-ISSUES OF 1861-1866 ISSUES
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
184 O 102 image#102, 1c Blue re-issue, a spectacular appearing used example, with flawless centering amid enormously large margins, its color could not be more intense nor its impression more detailed on brilliantly white paper, only a tiny thin keeps this stamp out of the gem class, extremely fine appearance and much scarcer used; 1994 APS certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $1,200.00

SOLD for $625.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:49 AM
185 og 103 image#103, 2c Black re-issue, an exceedingly handsome mint example of this rare and popular re-issue, being marvelously well centered amid considerably larger margins than usual, equally impressive is its uncommonly intense color and impression, full o.g., extremely fine; among the finest of the 979 issued; 1985 PF certificate. (Image) $4,000.00

SOLD for $6,000.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:50 AM
186 O 103 image#103, 2c Black re-issue, an unusually choice appearing used example of this re-issue rarity, wonderfully well centered with extravagantly large margins, deep re-issue color and a crisp detailed impression, light greenish blue cancel, small filled thin spots, not at all detracting from this stamp's extremely fine appearance; used examples of this stamp are of the utmost rarity with only about eighteen examples recorded and half of those having faults to some degree; the stamp offered here is among the best centered and lightly cancelled, a highly desirable example for the used collector; 2002 PF certificate; ex-Metzger, "Ganymede". (Image) $5,500.00

SOLD for $3,750.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:51 AM
187 O 104 image#104, 3c Brown red re-issue, a fabulous quality used example of this rare and popular re-issue, being not only extraordinarily well centered amid extravagantly large margins, but its overall freshness and brilliance is unlike any other used example, with color and impression that would rival any proof, on crisp white paper, plus it has an absolutely lovely strike of the numeral portion of the New York type "F" supplementary cancel, almost invisible tiny thin speck that is truly insignificant to this extremely fine rarity; only sixteen or seventeen examples of this stamp are known used with seven being completely sound, but virtually all of those are poorly centered and have unappealing cancels, the stamp offered here, despite the trivial thin speck, is considered to be the finest used example in existence; 1982 PF certificate; ex-Twigg-Smith, "Ganymede". (Image) $6,750.00

SOLD for $18,000.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:52 AM
188 O 105 image#105, 5c Brown re-issue, an extraordinarily attractive appearing example of this very rare used re-issue, deep luxuriant color and a strong characteristic re-issue impression on bright paper, exceptionally well centered within large margins, and featuring a perfectly struck "D" in oval of bars, being the obliterator portion of the New York station D post office duplex, small thins and pinhead stain, flaws that are rather typical of used re-issues, extremely fine appearance; while this value seems to have been used more than some of the others in this series, the number used represents only a tiny fraction of the 672 issued, the example offered here is one of the most attractive in terms of both centering and cancel of this tiny number of known used copies; 1995 PF certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $2,900.00

SOLD for $2,800.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:52 AM
189 O 107 image#107, 12c Black re-issue, an enormously rare used example of this re-issue, of which very few are in existence and fewer still are found in sound condition as the copy offered here, featuring outstanding centering amid extravagantly large margins, strikingly intense "jet" black color, usual duplex cancel, extremely fine; of the mere 398 stamps of this re-issue that were issued only thirteen examples have been recorded used, and of that tiny population only five examples are sound, that places the stamp offered here among the very finest available; an important rarity for the serious collector who is attempting to assemble a complete set of used re-issues; 1998 PF certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $6,750.00

SOLD for $14,500.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:53 AM
190 O 108 image#108, 15c Black re-issue, an enormously rare and desirable sound used example of this popular re-issue, quite well centered within large margins, intense "jet" black color and a razor-sharp impression on brilliant fresh white paper, attractively cancelled with large portion of a numeral "4" in oval of bars of the typical duplex found on many used re-issues, very fine. The numbers tell the story of just how incredibly rare the Fifteen Cent Re-issue is - of the 397 stamps that were issued, only ten examples have been recorded used. This is identical in number to the used 24c Re-issue as well. This miniscule number is less than any of the other values except the extremely rare 90c value (five recorded examples). Even the 30c has fourteen recorded copies despite its higher catalog value. Furthermore, it is doubtful that more than half of the ten known 15c stamps are sound. The example offered here is one of the four or five sound examples available to collectors and represents a great opportunity to acquire a stamp that often does not come on the market for long periods of time. Accompanied by a 2003 PF certificate; ex-"Ganymede". (Image) $9,000.00

SOLD for $30,000.00
Closing..Dec-09, 11:54 AM
191 O 109 image#109, 24c Deep violet re-issue, an immensely rare and sound used example of this re-issue, being exceptionally well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, deep luxuriant color and impression, much lighter duplex postmark than normally encountered on the used re-issues, extremely fine. The Twenty Four Cent Re-Issue is one of the scarcest in the series with only 346 stamps issued. It is therefore not surprising that only a handful were used. In fact, records show that only ten used examples have been recorded. This is less than any of other values except for the very rare 90c value. Of this tiny census one is repaired and two have thins making a sound example one of the rarest used stamps in United States philately. The stamp offered here is one of those select few used re-issues that is sound and in choice condition. This certainly ranks among the most desirable of the tiny number available to collectors. Shreves Galleries had the prevlidge of offering this very stamp in May of 2002 in the Joseph E. Lessin Collection where it realized a hammer price of $16,000.00. We are honored to offer this incredible rarity again to be able to grace another great used collection. Accompanied by 1990 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Lessin, "Ganymede". (Image) $10,000.00

SOLD for $22,000.00
