62 O 10 var. image#10 var., 3c Orange brown, position 9L1E, attractive example of this scarce plate, this position being one of only twelve positions that show inner frame line at left only, this stamp also possesses the scarce unusually bright orange brown color and detailed impression of this early printing, three exceptionally large margins, just partially into outer frame line at top, crisp grid cancel, very fine; Carroll Chase states that plate 1 early is by far the rarest of all the plates if it is counted as a separate plate. (Image) $170.00

SOLD for $300.00
Closing..Apr-08, 09:00 AM
63 O 11 var. image#11 var., 3c Experimental orange brown, position 10L1L, lovely top sheet-margin single with clear to large margins on the other three sides as well, except barely touching at bottom right, intense deep shade of this scarce color, attractive clear blue c.d.s. town cancel, extremely fine and incredibly choice; the experimental orange brown color was printed in late 1851 during the transition from the expensive true orange brown pigments to the later pigments, it comes from the late state of plate 1 only, thus is classified as a Scott #11, yet it is far rarer than the #10 shades, particularly in this premium condition. (Image) $450.00

SOLD for $270.00
Closing..Apr-08, 09:00 AM
64 O 11 var. image#11 var., 3c Experimental orange brown, position 40R1L, an incredibly handsome example of this rare color, being a particularly bright and attractive paler shade, plus a sharp impression that almost rivals the earlier orange browns, wide margins nearly all around, just into the top frame at far right, lovely black Charleston, S.C. c.d.s., extremely fine for this rare stamp. (Image) $450.00

SOLD for $250.00

68 c 11 var. image#11 var., 3c Experimental orange brown, gorgeous single in a rich deep shade of this unusually rare color, and possessing a razor-sharp impression, tied to clean cover to Shushan, N.Y. by neat dark blue "Salem/N.Y./Apr 1"(inverted numeral) c.d.s., unusually large and even margins nearly all around, barely touching frame line at bottom right, small trivial corner faults to cover, in no way detracting from this extremely fine and exceedingly rare cover; the experimental orange browns are among the rarest of the #10 and 11 varieties, but they are major rarities on covers as attractive as this; Dr. W.F. Amonette notes on the reverse. (Image) Est. 500-750

(Image) $300.00

70 og 11 image#11, 3c Dull red, plate 4, gem mint right sheet-margin single with center line, other margins are large to huge as well, showing small portions of the adjoining stamps at top and bottom, strong dull red color in a much deeper shade than usual, full though slightly disturbed, o.g., extremely fine; while not rare, there were about half the stamps produced from plate 4 as from any one of plates 1, 2 or 3, and the center line has the widest spacing of any of the plates, making select mint position examples, as this, particularly scarce. (Image) $300.00

SOLD for $200.00
Closing..Apr-08, 09:00 AM
71 O 11 image#11, 3c Dull red, position 10L4, striking top right corner sheet-margin single, with especially large selvage, other margins are clear to large as well, attractive pastel shade that has been identified as yellow rose red, detailed impression that shows the lack of inner frame lines, a feature of this plate, and this position is virtually lacking the outer frame line at right failing to be recut as was usual, adding to the eye appeal of this stamp is a bold black New York c.d.s., extremely fine and impressive; 1983 PF certificate. (Image) $12.50

SOLD for $130.00
Closing..Apr-08, 09:00 AM

75 og/nhbl 11 var. image#11 var., 3c Brownish carmine, an incredible mint block of eighteen (3x6), from the very scarce late state of plate 5, positions 22-24/72-74R5L, virtually full to large margins all around, just barely into the frame line at a couple points, excellent strong color that is by Carroll Chase's listing a bright rich brownish carmine shade of 1856 when this plate was in production, plus a clear and highly detailed impression, full original gum, horizontal fold between the second and third rows from the top, light hinge marks in the right stamps of the second and third rows, plus internal wrinkles causing tiny thin spots to the center stamps in those same two rows, the other fourteen stamps are technically never hinged though trivial gum flaws, such as finger prints, may take some out of the never hinged category, overall very fine and amazingly well preserved for a block of this period; according to Carroll Chase, of all the plates that produced #11's, plate 5 (in its late state, as only #10's were produced in its early state) is the scarcest except for plate 8, large multiples are decidedly rare (most coming from plates 1, 2 and 3) and no plate blocks are recorded of plate 5; this block is particularly desirable as an exhibition piece as the top right block shows remarkably well the small spots produced by rust spots that are unique to this plate and confirm its identification beyond doubt; catalog value is for three blocks of four and three pairs. (Image) $8,225.00+

SOLD for $7,000.00
