1919-1921 COIL WASTE
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
202 nhPB 538 image#538, 1c Green coil waste, perf. 11x10, an incredible quality full top margin "S30" and plate no. 9453 block of four, possessing the finest centering we have ever seen on any plate block of this value, each stamp boasting uncharacteristically huge and well balanced margins all around, bright color, o.g., natural flat plate gum skips, n.h., extremely fine; a true condition rarity. (Image) $160.00

Closing..Feb-11, 05:00 PM
203 og/nhPB 538a image#538a, 1c Green coil waste, vertical pair, imperforate horizontally, full top margin plate no. 13612 block of six containing three error pairs, a plate block of six is seen with much less frequency than a plate block of four configuration, quite fresh, well centered, strong rich color, folded along right vertical row of perforations ending in a small margin tear, the left plate block of four being perfectly intact and choice (catalogs $1,375.00 alone), o.g., n.h. (right pair, which can be removed is barely hinged), extremely fine. (Image) $1,425.00+

SOLD for $800.00
Closing..Feb-11, 05:00 PM
204 nhPB 539 image#539, 2c Carmine rose coil waste, Ty. II, an extraordinary full top margin "S20" and plate no. 7462 block of eight, quite fresh, rich distinctive carmine rose color, while centered just a bit to right it is quite typical of this notoriously difficult issue and no other existing plate block possesses any better centering, o.g., n.h., one stamp in plate block with tiny natural gum skip, fine.Plate blocks of this coil waste issue are immensely rare. In fact, a thorough review of major auction sales of the last 40 years reveals only four different examples have appeared on the market in that time. Three being plate blocks of four, one of which was completely sound and lightly hinged (ex-Wampler sale - Shreves Philatelic Galleries, April 1998), a second sound example but with disturbed gum, and the third example was also hinged, but has a light diagonal crease. There is only one example that is both never hinged and in a plate block of eight configuration - the extraordinary plate block offered here from Dr. Fogelson's collection. Centering on all four recorded plate blocks is quite similar, with Dr. Fogelson's example being perhaps just slightly better centered than the others. As further evidence of this plate block's status as one of the rarest in United States philately, even the legendary Todd plate block holding did not contain a single example. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the serious collector who is attempting to assemble the most comprehensive collection of plate blocks ever formed. Accompanied by a 1972 PF certificate. (Image) $40,000.00+

SOLD for $37,500.00

211 nhPB 541 image#541, 3c Violet coil waste, an extremely elusive full top margin plate no. 8144 block of eight, while the Scott catalog lists the acceptable plate block as containing only four stamps, the purist will appreciate the desirability and rarity of this plate block of six (plus two extra stamps at right), with the plate number being in the traditional center position, as this is from one of the few incorrectly cut sheets of 170 yielding a plate number block of six, additionally this plate is considerably better centered than usually found, fresh and bright, o.g., n.h. (top right stamp, not part of plate block, faintly hinged), choice very fine; catalogs $930.00 as a "normal" plate block, plus four singles. (Image) Est. 750-1,000
