2 ogPB 183 image#183, 2c Vermilion, full top margin imprint and plate "No. 296" block of fourteen, with imperforate half arrow at left, being one of only three top position plate blocks recorded in the Chapin census, exceptionally fresh, intense color, rather well centered for a plate block of this size and vintage, full o.g. with just the barest trace of hinging on a few stamps, many others n.h., bottom left stamp (not part of the plate block proper) with trivial age spot, fine-very fine; Chapin census #458; ex-"Southern Cross". 1887-1888 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
4 nhPB 214 image#214, 3c Vermilion, a spectacularly fresh and intact full top margin imprint and plate "No. 421" block of ten, in the most incredible state of preservation imaginable, with truly prooflike color and impression on immaculate paper. wonderfully well centered, pristine o.g., never hinged, very fine and choice; as ten never hinged stamps alone this catalogs $2,000.00, so the catalog value quoted in Scott for a plate block bears little relevance to a plate block in this extraordinary quality. (Image) for hinged $1,400.00

SOLD for $3,500.00
Closing..Feb-11, 05:00 PM
5 ogPB 215 image#215, 4c Carmine, an exceedingly handsome full top margin imprint, letter "L" and plate "No. 543" block of twelve, with imperforate half arrow at right, sumptuously rich color and strong impression, outstanding centering throughout, unblemished full o.g. with just the faintest suggestion of hinging on a couple of stamps, most stamps are never hinged, inconsequential inclusion spot in selvage, extremely fine; according to our records, this is the finest of the very few existing plate blocks of this value, even the legendary Todd and Wampler collections had no example which comes close to the quality of this extraordinary plate block. (Image) $5,500.00

SOLD for $8,500.00
Closing..Feb-11, 05:00 PM
6 ogPB 216 image#216, 5c Indigo, an eye-appealing full top margin imprint, letter "K" and plate "No. 540" block of twelve, with imperforate half arrow at left, possessing wonderfully rich color and a crisp detailed impression, quite well centered, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, there are just a couple of tiny hinge slivers sensibly reinforcing a few separated perforations, very fine; an exceptional example of this 19th century plate block rarity, this being the first premium quality full top example we have seen on the market in years. (Image) $9,000.00

SOLD for $7,500.00

10 ogPB 226 image#226, 10c Green, a remarkable quality full top imprint, letter "E" and plate "No. 28" block of ten, being in a condition unrivalled by any other we are aware of, boasting incredibly intense color and a prooflike impression on especially bright paper, exceedingly well centered for a multiple of this size, brilliantly fresh o.g., lightly hinged on one stamp only, rest n.h., certainly extremely fine overall; a highly desirable example of this Small Bank Note plate block rarity; ex-Anderson. (Image) $4,200.00

SOLD for $6,750.00
Closing..Feb-11, 05:00 PM
11 nhPB 229 image#229, 90c Orange, a spectacular full top margin imprint and plate "No. 25" block of twelve, possessing fabulously intense and radiant color, marvelously well centered, particularly for a multiple of this size, unusually crisp and intact perforations all around, pristine full o.g. without any bends or skips, never hinged, there is a mild band of toning along the top edge of the selvage on the reverse (just faintly showing through to the front), still very fine and marvelously choice overall; there is little question that this ranks among the finest of the approximately six to eight examples recorded of this important plate block rarity, and to our knowledge this is one of only two never hinged full top examples available among this scant population. (Image) $46,100.00+

SOLD for $45,000.00
