United States Stamps continued...

1916-1917 Washington-Franklin Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
181 nh 476A image#476A, 30c Orange red, the extremely rare unwatermarked, perforated 10 issue, position 13 from plate no. 6917 sheet, a particularly fresh and attractive mint example of this elusive stamp, possessing rich luxuriant color and a clean crisp impression on bright paper, while the original discovery sheet (one of only two ever found) was quite poorly centered, this is one of a few whose perforations clear the design on all four sides, o.g., never hinged, very fine for this; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) $5,750.00

SOLD for $5,500.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
182 og 477 image#477, 50c Light violet, quite fresh, rich luxuriant color for this normally pale stamp, well centered, o.g., lightly hinged, choice very fine; 1980 PF certificate. (Image) $1,100.00

SOLD for $650.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
183 O 482A image#482A, 2c Deep rose imperforate, Ty. Ia, Schermack Ty. III perforations, used as always (there is one uncancelled stamp known which has Schermack perforations trimmed completely off), light and unobtrusive wavy line machine cancel, full Schermack perforations at left, strikingly intense color in a deep rose shade distinctive only to this type, large margins on three sides, centered into perforations at left, minute tear inside top perforation not mentioned on accompanying certificate, fine appearance. This stamp was issued specifically for use by the Schermack Company in their own patented stamp-affixing machines. Much like the 1908 Four Cent Brown Imperforate, the stamp dispensing and affixing machines applied the stamps one at a time, often slicing the stamps not on the oblong perforations as intended, but typically well into the design and usually cutting off the perforations on at least one side. The experimental nature of both stamps, issued without advance notice, resulted in few collectors saving and seeking out these rarities. This is an important 20th century rarity of which only 38 examples are recorded, a large number of which have the Schermack perforations trimmed off on one side and often centered into the design. With select examples of this rarity topping $50,000.00 or more at auction, this may very well be the most affordable example to come on the market since it was last offered in our auction of The Joseph E. Lessin Collection in May, 2002. Accompanied by a clear 1960 PF certificate; ex-Lessin. (Image) $50,000.00

SOLD for $22,000.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
184 nhbl 485 image#485, 5c Carmine imperforate single error in a pristine right sheet-margin block of twelve (4 x 3), large to huge margins all around, brilliantly fresh, lovely rich color, immaculate o.g., never hinged, extremely fine; it has been recorded by George B. Sloane that a total of 48 uncut imperforate sheets of 400 of plate no. 7942 were sold out of the New York Post Office, each sheet containing a single error and a double error, making 48 the maximum number of either error block and certainly less than that are available today; a marvelously choice example of this important and highly desirable error rarity. (Image) $32,500.00

SOLD for $29,000.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
1916-1919 Coils
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
185 og 491 image#491, 2c Carmine coil, Ty. II, perf. 10 vert., an exceptionally fresh and attractive example of this very rare and difficult coil, being quite well centered, rich characteristic carmine shade, crisp detailed impression, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, very fine and quite choice for this; photocopy of a 1973 PF certificate for a pair, this being the left stamp, and a 1997 PF certificate as a single. (Image) $2,200.00

SOLD for $1,700.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
186 og 491 image#491, 2c Carmine coil, Ty. II, perf. 10 vert., a desirable mint pair of this rare and sought-after rotary coil, marvelously fresh, with rich distinctive color, considerably better centered than the majority of pairs one sees, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, choice very fine; any #491 pair is rare, but to find one in this premium condition is quite a challenge; 1987 and 1995 PF certificates. (Image) $5,250.00

SOLD for $4,000.00

1917-1919 Washington-Franklin Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
187 nh 505 image#505, 5c Rose error, an incredibly choice mint example of this scarce error, top stamp in se-tenant vertical pair with a 2c value, being marvelously well centered within large margins, plus its color is unusually bright and fresh, immaculate o.g., n.h., extremely fine; rarely encountered in such select quality. (Image) $650.00

SOLD for $725.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
188 og 518b image#518b, $1.00 Deep brown, fresh mint example of this rare and often misidentified shade, possessing especially true deep brown color (actually the shade identification in Scott is a misnomer, as examples of this stamp must display hues of yellow throughout the design in order to be correctly identified as #518b), o.g., only a faint trace of hinging, fine; nearly all existing examples of this shade are poorly centered and a terribly difficult stamp to find regardless of centering; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) $1,800.00

SOLD for $650.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
189 og 519 image#519, 2c Carmine, precisely centered single of this scarce and frequently faked issue, large margins, strong characteristic color, o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) $450.00

SOLD for $350.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM

VII, impressive single with four very large margins being taken from a center line block showing portions of the guide lines at left and bottom, strong rich color on bright paper, o.g., only the barest trace of hinging, if at all, an extremely fine example of this rare 20th century stamp; 1995 APS certificate for a center line block of four, this being the top right stamp. (Image) $2,100.00

SOLD for $2,700.00

Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
191 nh 539 image#539, 2c Carmine rose coil waste, Ty. II, perf. 11x10, brilliant "post office" fresh mint example of this rare and difficult stamp, deep luxuriant color and crisp impression, centered to the bottom right as often found as this issue is notoriously poorly centered, pristine o.g., never hinged, fine; 1966 PF certificate and photocopy of a 1992 PF certificate, both for the block of four from which this was taken, this being the bottom left stamp. (Image) $4,000.00

SOLD for $1,600.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
192 O 544 image#544, 1c Green coil waste, perf. 11, an impressive appearing used example of this extremely scarce and difficult stamp, possessing wonderful centering within totally uncharacteristically large margins, features hardly ever found on this issue, exceptionally bright and attractive color and showing a detailed sharp impression, plus neat portion of desirable machine cancel, small edge crease at left apparent in watermark fluid only and not detracting from this stamps gorgeous and highly unusual extremely fine appearance; probably no more than 100 used copies exist and priced by Scott in the grade of only fine because the vast majority are poorly centered, particularly desirable with this exceptional visage despite the small flaw; clear 1957 PF certificate for a pair, this being the right stamp. (Image) $3,250.00

SOLD for $3,000.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
193 O 594 image#594, 1c Green coil waste, a very presentable example of one of the most difficult stamps of the 20th century, especially when it is considered that fewer than 100 examples of this stamp have been confirmed, better centered than most with large margins at top and bottom and clear of the design on both sides, perforations at left trimmed away, unusually lightly cancelled, fine appearance; a stamp that is missing in even the most advanced United States collections; 1954 PF certificate. (Image) $6,750.00

SOLD for $3,000.00
Closing..Jun-11, 09:00 AM
