2252 ogc UO8 image#UO8, 3c Black Post Office Dept on white, die PD5, size 10, knife 54, wmk. 5, a wonderfully choice example of this incredibly rare mint entire, fresh and clean with sharp detailed embossing, plus crisp clean edges, extremely fine; it is with great pleasure that we are able to offer another example of this rarity so soon after the stellar collection of cut squares and entires formed by Stephen S. Whitington, as this envelope only seldom comes on the auction market being missing from most of the major postal stationery collections, and to be in such select condition is equally unusual (UPSS #PD42). (Image) $5,750.00

SOLD for $4,000.00
Closing..Jun-12, 09:00 AM
2253 og UO25 image#UO25, 10c Dark red War Dept. on white, an enormously rare and particularly choice mint cut square, being a full corner measuring a lavish 41x46mm, possessing pristine freshness on bright white paper, strong highly detailed embossing, extremely fine; this is only the second mint cut square of this rarity that we have ever offered, the other, being substantially smaller and not a full corner, was first offered in our October 1998 auction of the "Michigan" collection and again in the outstanding collection of Dr. Jerry Summers in October 2002 where it realized an impressive $19,800.00, the example offered here is arguably the finest of the very few existing examples of this official cut square rarity. 2259 ogc UO41 image#UO41, 15c Vermilion War Dept. on white, die WD7, size 25, knife 122, wmk. 2, an enormously rare mint entire that is in the slightly larger size of the two large sizes in which this comes, ancient mounting adherence to the front and back at the extreme left edge of the envelope causing damage to the front, actually quite clean and attractive for this size envelope and otherwise very fine; a very rare envelope as it is believed that there are less than eight entires total of both sizes of this value without "Specimen" overprint; terribly undercataloged in Scott compared to the $7,500.00 catalog value quoted in the newest edition of the UPSS catalog and the first example we have offered of this size; ex-Barkhausen (UPSS #WD45).
