762 og U140A image#U140A, 2c Reddish brown on orange, mint cut square measuring 32x37mm, insignificant and faint corner bend at bottom right, mentioned for strict accuracy, very fine; this cut square over the years has been confused with its Two Cent Vermilion counterpart also on orange paper (Scott #U145) and in many cases the two have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as one and the same, as evidenced by the accompanying 1960 certificate submitted by the Raymond H. Weill Co. identifying and certifying this as #U145, this is clearly the red brown shade and this famous cut square has been sold and identified in major auctions (including the Lilly Sale in 1967-68 and our "Michigan" Collection sale in June of 1998) as the so-called red brown shade of Scott #U145 (now #U140A); an immense cut square rarity of which only three or four examples are known, also two entires of different sizes are known of this; 1960 PF certificate as #U145; ex-Barkhausen, Lilly, "Michigan" Collection and Floyd. (Image) 25,000.00

Closing..Dec-13, 09:00 AM
763 og U145 image#U145, 2c Vermilion on orange, mint cut square, measuring 35x40mm, a wonderfully attractive appearing example of this major cut square rarity, brilliant vermilion color on bright orange paper, highly detailed sharp embossing, light horizontal crease that is barely perceptible from the face, extremely fine appearance; like the #U140A offered above there has been confusion between the vermilion and reddish brown colors, it is a pleasure to be able to offer the two colors in the same sale so that the drastic difference can be seen; this is also an immense cut square rarity as only three cut squares are believed to exist and, unlike the other color variety, there are no known entires, it is our experience that the vermilion color is, by far, the more elusive of the two, the first example that we ever handled of this was a slightly smaller copy in the Fred C. Ballman collection of cut squares offered in our October 2002 Collector's Series sale (that copy also had a trivial light corner bend) where it realized a record $57,500.00, plus the 10% buyers premium; ex-Lilly.
