162 c S.G. #1, 3 imageS.G. #1, 3, 1861 3p Bluish green and 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, a scarce and quite attractive horizontal pair of the 1p Bluish green along with 6p Rose, tied to most interesting large OHMS cover to Barbados by "A15" in bars oval cancel, small "Grenada/OC 09 61" c.d.s. with inverted index letter "C", the trip to Barbados was quick with double-arc "Barbadoes/OC 10 1861" receiving c.d.s. on the front, then things get complicated, four different manuscript rate marking are crossed out ending up with 2/-, the cover was refused in Barbados, apparently having something to do with the postage and returned to Grenada with a rare "G/Feb 8/1862" c.d.s. of the General Post Office used as receiving marking some four months after it was originally sent, cover has been repaired including a piece added to the top left corner, the cancel on the left side of the pair indicates that there were additional stamps here that were torn off; nevertheless a rare first issue cover with substantial value for just the used stamps, plus the rare "G" postmark is one of only four known examples during the this first period of use; an interesting usage worthy of study (Scott #1a, 2). 163 c S.G. #1, 3 imageS.G. #1, 3, 1861 3p Bluish green and 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, singles of both of the first issue values tied to 1861 cover to Villeneuve Sur Lot, France by "A15" in bars oval cancel, the 6p is also tied by French maritime transit, "Grenada/NO 24 61" small c.d.s. with inverted index letter "C" on the reverse, red London Paid transit c.d.s. on front and red manuscript "8" rate marking, 1p has clipped perfs. at top into the design, an additional fine #1, which does not belong, is hinged in place to left where an original 1p has been removed, despite these condition problems an attractive cover that is of the greatest rarity being the only known cover with the 8p rate to France when forwarded through Britain, this was a short-lived rate that was 2p more than the 6p packet rate to England, it ended when the packet rate changed to 1/- in April 1863 (Scott #1a, 2). 164 ogbl S.G. #2 imageS.G. #2, 1862 1p Green, rough perf 14 to 16, an impressive bottom left corner-margin block of 30 (6x5), unusually fresh and intact for such a large multiple, quite well centered for these very closely spaced stamps, in fact this block shows the great variance in spacing, the space between the left two vertical rows is so small that even these small perforation holes cannot fit without overlapping the designs, full o.g., 21 stamps are never hinged, very fine (Scott #1; $1,750.00+). 166 O S.G. #3 imageS.G. #3, 1861 6p Rose with handstamp "Cancelled" in bars oval cancel, this example bears portions of two such cancels and shows more of the cancel than many of the various stamps on which it was applied, faint barely perceptible horizontal crease, otherwise very fine for this. This cancel was applied in 1861 by the security printers, Perkins, Bacon and Co. to six examples of each stamp they had in their possession and given to Ormond Hill, the eldest son of Sir Rowland Hill, for members of the Hill family. This story is well documented in the book Cancelled by Peter Jaffe. Only occasionally do examples from any country come to market. Even though six stamps of this value of Grenada were so cancelled, this is the only example that we have found any record of having been sold in the philatelic market; a marvelous rarity; ex-Booth, Gilbert-Lodge, Messenger, Hackmey and Latto (Scott #2). 169 c S.G. #3 imageS.G. #3, 1861 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, an attractive single that is quite well centered for this first issue, neatly tied to folded letter to Trinidad by "A15" in bars oval cancel, small "Grenada/JU 04 63" c.d.s. on the reverse along with double-arc Trinidad backstamp, red crayon "4" rate marking indicating prepayment of sea postage to Trinidad, normal file folds that have been professionally cleaned for exhibit, very fine and very scarce early cover; unlike the 1p frankings to Trinidad, this is a fully paid cover paying internal postage of both Grenada and Trinidad plus the rate by ship between the two islands, a lovely example of this usage; 1969 BPA certificate (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

170 c S.G. #3 imageS.G. #3, 1861 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, single centered into the design at left as this first issue is often found, solidly tied by "A15" in bars oval cancel, with London Paid receiving cancel just to the left, clear "Grenada/JA 24 62" small c.d.s. with inverted index letter "C" on the reverse, manuscript "/5" rate marking indicating the amount due to England for ocean passage and internal postage, attractive cover and very fine; the 6p packet rate to Great Britain (same as the fully paid rate to Trinidad) was only in effect until April 1, 1863 when it was raised to 1/-, thus single frankings to Great Britain always have the first issue 6p Rose and are significantly scarcer than pairs of the later 6p values for the new rate (Scott #2). 172 og S.G. #3a imageS.G. #3a, 1862 6p Lake red, perf. 11 to 12 1/2, an unissued value that is believed to have been used for perforation trials of a new perforation machine producing perforations gauging between 11 and 12 1/2, this example is large and exceptionally well centered for this as the perforations produced by this machine were generally unacceptable and produced very poorly centered stamps, o.g., h.r., very fine and scarce, especially in this premium condition (Scott #2b; $1,000.00). 173 ogbl S.G. #3a S.G. #3a, 1862 6p Lake red, perf. 11 to 12 1/2, unissued value in mint block of four, attractive with strong bright color, o.g., h.r., light creases, mostly in the bottom pair, otherwise a fine and rare block; the perforation trials that were done on this issue were unsuccessful and one of the reasons is the holes produced by this machine were even larger than the previous 14 to 16 gauge, thus encroaching on the designs even more, which is well illustrated by this block, but even so better centered than most; 1971 BPA certificate (Scott #2b; $4,000.00+). 174 og S.G. #3a var. imageS.G. #3a var., 1862 6p Lake red on horizontally laid paper, perf. 11 to 12 1/2, this is part of the unissued printings that were used for the perforation trials, quite well centered for this, o.g. light diagonal crease and trace of soiling, very fine appearance; a scarce paper variety that is far rarer than the differential in catalog price between the two papers would imply, this variety priced in a footnote stating "It has also been seen on horizontally laid paper" (Scott #2b var.). 176 c S.G. #4 S.G. #4, 1864 1p Green, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, attractive single with excellent color, as well as being quite well centered, tied to very large portion of the St. George's Chronicle and Grenada Gazette of Saturday, April 13, 1867, by "A15" in bars oval cancel, paper is addressed to Henry Blau of London and shows the use of this 1p transatlantic rate when posted from St. George's (where no internal rate was required), paper has the usual splits and deterioration that one would expect for a newspaper that is 135 years old, nevertheless well preserved for this and of the utmost rarity as newspapers were seldom saved let alone kept for this long (Scott #3). 177 c S.G. #4 imageS.G. #4, 1864 1p Green, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, horizontal strip of five in a deep shade of the green, tied to folded letter to New York by "A15" in bars oval cancel, small "Grenada/JA 8 64" c.d.s. with index letter "A" on the reverse, St. Thomas transit and routed through Halifax and Boston, with an attractive "Boston Mass/10/ Feb 2" c.d.s. just tying the strip, stamps with the normal variable centering and vertical file fold affecting the center stamp in the strip, still a very fine example of early international mail from Grenada; the letter is endorsed inside "P mail via Havana, Duplicate via Havana" indicating that identical letters were sent by different routes to make sure the correspondence would be received despite the uncertainties of ocean travel and a civil war just ending in the United States; interesting and very scarce (Scott #3). 178 c S.G. #4 imageS.G. #4, 1864 1p Green, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, horizontal strip of five in a lighter slightly bluish shade of green, variable centering into the perforations at top, tied to 1869 folded cover to New York by light strikes of "A15" in bars oval cancel, light "Grenada/NO 10 69" c.d.s. with index letter "A" below, this cover has the unusual endorsement "per Brazilian Steamer via St. Thomas," a St. Thomas transit is found on the reverse, on arrival a "N.Y. Steamship/10" rate c.d.s. was applied indicating the amount due for the ship service and local postage, this marking also ties the strip, vertical file fold affects the second stamp in the strip, a fine and rare posting showing the fortuitous use of a foreign ship passing through the West Indies to the United States; ex-Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #3) (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

179 c S.G. #4 imageS.G. #4, 1864 1p Green, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, horizontal strip of five in an exceptionally deep shade of this issue, normal variable centering just into the design at top, tied to cover to Nova Scotia, an apparently personal correspondence to Miss Agness Ilsley in Halls Harbor on Cornwallis Island, strip is just tied by one of five strikes of the "A15" in bars oval cancels, slightly obscured "Grenada/JA 02 69" c.d.s with index letter "A" on the front, St. Thomas and various Nova Scotia transits on the reverse, a paid cover carried by British sea post, some staining to the cover slightly affecting the stamps and tiny edge tear at right, still an attractive fine cover and scarce posting; ex-Charlton-Henry, Gilbert-Lodge and Towers (Scott #3). 180 c S.G. #4, 6 imageS.G. #4, 6, 1863-64, 1p Green and 6p Rose, both rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, an incredibly attractive small 1869 registered cover to Stratford, England, franked with a well centered horizontal strip of four of the 1p Green paying the registry fee, just tied to the back flap by "A15" in bars oval cancel, plus an attractive pair of the 6p Rose on the front for the packet fee to England with a central strike of the same cancel, small "Grenada/JA 09 69" c.d.s. with index letter "A" at left along with a light but discernible straight line "Registered" handstamp, registry c.d.s. transit on the reverse, tear in back flap mended to preserve the lovely appearance of this rare franking, otherwise extremely fine; registry was little used from colonies in this early period, the fact they had a handstamp for it attests to its availability, nevertheless only three covers are recorded with this usage and the Walker collection contains two of them, this being the most attractive cover despite the marking being slightly weaker, a wonderful exhibition piece (Scott #3-4).
