II, positions 31-32/41-42/51-52L2, full left margin partial imprint and plate "No. 2." block of six, being the largest known imprint and plate number multiple known from the left pane, featuring an enormous sheet margin at left, plus very large margins at top (showing portions of adjoining stamps) and at right, bottom two stamps separated from pane irregularly cutting into design, incredibly intense color and a prooflike impression on bright paper, full o.g., lightly hinged, couple of relatively mild creases, none of which affect the impressive overall appearance of this important One Cent Blue plate number multiple; in addition to being the largest imprint and plate number multiple known from the left pane, it is the third largest plate number multiple from either pane for a Ty. II stamp, with only two full imprint and plate number blocks of eight recorded (both from the right pane) and these catalog $36,000.00 each; illustrated both in Ashbrook (page 198) and Neinken (page 180) when it was part of an irregular block of seventeen; Chapin census #2; ex-Cipolla and Chapin. 24 ngPB 7 #7, 1c Blue, Ty. II, positions 39-40/49-50/59-60/69-70R2, the spectacular unused right sheet margin full imprint and plate "No. 2." block of eight, ample to mostly large margins all around, rich luxuriant color and a strong detailed impression on bright paper, the multiple does have some small faults including thin spots and minor ink staining on positions 59-60, however these do not materially affect its impressive overall appearance, nor are they of importance considering that this is one of only two such intact plate blocks in existence; certainly among the most important plate blocks in United States philately, not only because of its extreme rarity, but it is also the first Scott number for which a plate number block is possible; the other known plate block (ex-Wampler) is also unused and has numerous overall small flaws, nevertheless when it was sold by this firm in April 1998 it attracted spirited bidding resulting in a record realization of $35,750.00 (including premium - the basis for the current Scott evaluation), the Wampler example sold to an important private collector and will presumably not be available for the foreseeable future; Chapin census #3; 1958 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. II and IV combination pair, positions 4/14R1L, position 4R1L being the sole position on Plate 1 Late that was not recut, an extraordinary quality vertical pair boasting large to enormous margins, including a sizable sheet margin on the rare position 4R1L, deep rich color and impression on bright paper, neatly and unobtrusively postmarked, top stamp with trivial natural paper wrinkle of no significance, extremely fine; a gem combination pair of considerable rarity, whose catalog value does not accurately reflect its true value, as evidenced by a $3,575.00 realization (including premium) for a similarly choice pair (positions 3-4R1L) sold in our October 2001 auction of the William S. III, position 99R2, a fabulous quality used example of this rare and highly desirable stamp, being incredibly well margined for any One Cent Blue imperforate, but especially so on such an elusive type and position, with extra-large to huge margins all around, rich luxuriant color in a deep shade, plus its impression is especially strong which clearly shows enormously wide breaks in both the top and bottom labels, all wonderfully complemented by neat strikes of a blue town c.d.s., extremely fine; a striking gem example of the rare Type III from position 99R2, which produced the finest and most distinctive example of this type; 1982 PF certificate; ex-Newbury (where it was described as a "superb rarity") and Chapin. IIIa, a magnificent quality mint example of a stamp that is missing from even the most advanced collections of mint United States stamps, being one of the few premium quality One Cent Blue Ty.
