42 ogOOc 10-11 #10-11, 3c 1851 interesting and extensive plating and usage study, this collection contains over 275 stamps including multiples, plus 56 covers, all concentrating on the imperforate 3c issue of the years 1851-1857, it starts with a selection of eleven used singles of the orange brown color including four on piece, plus nine covers, in both these and the later colors an emphasis has been placed on plating, the orange browns are represented by examples from the four plates that were used for this color including both the early and intermediate states of Plate 1, the covers are all dated between July 15th and November 4th of 1851 except one Augusta, Georgia cover of February 12, 1852 with a clearly identified 3c Orange brown from plate 2 early, the earliest dated item is a Plate 1 early stamp on July 8, 1851 large piece with Blood's pre-paid handstamp, the rest of the stamps are the various colors under Scott #11, includes several pages showing the various colors and trying to place them by year date, the only mint examples include a horizontal pair with o.g. and a reconstructed bottom margin block of six (2x3; positions 78R1L/99R1L) consisting of two vertical strips of three, also with o.g., other used multiples include a horizontal strip of five, two strips of four and a strip of three, plus various pairs, a reconstruction of the imprint and plate no.3 is formed by three stamps, numerous plate varieties are shown, and plating has been done where the collector could, single stamps also show various cancels and the over 50 covers show a wide range of postal history, some of the highlights include two covers with Blood's Despatch locals and a third with Boyd's City Express local, two New York Express Mail covers, various ship markings and town cancels, etc., one cover has a position from the large crack in Plate 5 (position 94L5L), with a position 84L5L on piece included to show the continuation of the crack, this is a wonderful collection for the student of this popular classic issue, condition varies as would be expected for a collection of this size, but there are numerous four-margin copies and many are fine-very fine or better; also includes the 26 actual size plating reconstruction photos from the Smithsonian Institute for all the plates in their various states, indispensable for plating. 43 ng 12 image#12, 5c Red brown, an exceedingly handsome and choice example of this rare and challenging unused stamp, being in far better quality than most of the existing population of unused copies, with four uniformly large margins, truly prooflike color and impression which contrast wonderfully with this stamp's bright fresh paper, accompanying certificate mentions the presence of a "tiny corner crease at top right" which we, quite frankly, are unable to detect, still very fine; 2002 PF certificate. III, a magnificent quality example of this rare mint classic, being in a truly remarkable state of preservation for a stamp of this vintage, possessing an incredible overall freshness and mint "bloom", with strikingly bright color and a highly detailed impression on immaculate paper, lavishly large margins all around, and its reverse is equally impressive, featuring full clean o.g. that has been only very lightly hinged, extremely fine; a gem original gum example of the 1855 Ten Cent Type III imperforate stamp, certainly one of the finest in existence; photocopy of a 1978 PF certificate for a strip of three from which this stamp was taken, plus a 2001 PF certificate as a single.
