260 PBPBPB 320 image#320, 2c Carmine imperforate, Schermack Ty. Ia perforations (seven holes), a single example (perfs. trimmed at left by vending machine) tied to a neat corner card cover of the "Murphy Chair Co./Manufacturers/Detroit, Mich." by clear "Detroit, Mich. Sta. F/Dec 14, 1907" wavy line machine cancel, addressed to and backstamped Winchendon, Mass., very fine; there were only five commercial Detroit companies who used the Schermack Ty. I stamps (the Murphy Chair Co. being one of them) and their use went virtually unnoticed by philatelists making these covers among the rarest of all vending machine coils on cover; in fact, we can find only two such covers ever having been offered at public auction; but most impressive of all is the fact that this December 14, 1907 cover represents the earliest documented usage of any U.S. coil stamp, whether a private vending coil or a Bureau issue coil; this very cover was the subject of one of Donna O'Keefe's Philatelic Gems articles in Linn's Stamp News (September 21, 1992 edition, page 22, copy included); a must for the serious collector of important vending machine coil rarities, as well as a key to a gold medal exhibit of either coil issues of the United States or the 1902-03 Bureau issues; 1991 APS certificate; ex-Agris (where it realized $12,100.00 in our September 1997 sale).
